The Dean of Students Office has a few hundred tickets to the Tuesday, September 23rd against the Tampa Bay Rays game starting at 7:10pm at the historic Fenway Park.  Tickets are $20 (Center and Right Field Bleachers).  They will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.  We accept credit cards (AmEx, Visa and MasterCard) or check.

If you want to sit with your classmates, you should come to the DOS Office together to purchase your tickets.  Spouses and guests are welcome, and we will check student IDs.  Resale of tickets is strictly prohibited.  We will begin ticket sales promptly at 12 noon on Tuesday, September 9th in the DOS Office (WCC 3039).

Applications for spring 2015 Semester Abroad are due September 15

The Semester Abroad Program is a wonderful opportunity for Harvard Law School students to receive a semester of ungraded credit towards the Harvard J.D. degree for study at a law school overseas. Apply now for an empirical legal studies workshop!

The SJD Empirical Legal Studies group is hosting Professor Michael Heise from Cornell, among the nation’s leading empirical legal scholars, for a unique workshop on how to conduct quantitative research in law. The workshop will cover basic statistical methods and apply them to questions like how to run quantitative analysis of judicial decisions and jury awards, how to explore the relationship between punitive and compensatory damage awards in civil litigation, and more. Participants in the workshop will also participate in an introductory session to statistical software (Stata) that will set the foundations for the workshop. The Stata session will be held on 10/2, 1-4pm, and the workshop on quantitative research in law will be held on 10/10, 9am-3pm. Prior statistical knowledge and/or experience in empirical research is an advantage, but not a perquisite. All students are invited to apply! Trial Team Tryouts for 2014 Annual National PR Trial Advocacy Competition in Puerto Rico

The Inter-American University of Puerto Rico School of Law and the Puerto Rico Bar Association are sponsoring the 2014 Annual National PR Trial Advocacy Competition in Puerto Rico on October 30 – November 1, 2014. Harvard returns to this competition as champions from the 2009 and 2010 competitions. Four HLS students will compete against teams from other law schools trying a criminal case. Each team will participate in three preliminary mock trials, after which the highest-scoring teams will proceed to the semi-finals and then to the championship round. Students on the team will act as counsel and/or witnesses for their teammates in each round. All students will have the opportunity to serve as counsel in at least one round. Clinical instructors from the Criminal Justice Institute (CJI) will serve as coaches for the trial team. Interested students should pick up tryout materials from the CJI office located on the fifth floor of WCC (Clinical Wing, Suite 5116) and select a tryout time slot on the posted schedule in the office. The trial team will be selected after “tryouts.” Tryouts will be held on September 16 and 17, 2014. Complete an application and submit it at the time you sign up for a time slot. Tryout materials and a sign-up sheet for trying out will be available in the CJI office starting Monday, September 8, 2014. Important Note: Tryout slots will be limited — please be sure to sign up early. Please feel free to call CJI Clinical Instructors Dehlia Umunna or Kristin Muniz at 6-8143 if you have questions.

Professor Carol Steiker Seeks Research Assistants

Professor Carol Steiker needs research assistants for work on her forthcoming book on capital punishment. Research assistants should have taken Capital Punishment in America, or are currently enrolled in that course. These positions will be for fall 2014 and spring 2015. The Office of Clinical and Pro Bono Programs (OCP) is seeking students from all class years (including LLM) to sit on its Student Advisory Committee and contribute their ideas and suggestions regarding curriculum, new projects and legal practice placements, policies, and law firm pro bono among other things. Members of the Committee serve as liaisons, facilitating communication between the Office of Clinical and Pro Bono Programs and students, clinical faculty, and the law school administration. The Committee helps the Office identify and address current needs, serves as a sounding board as the Office implements program changes, and assists in strategizing about future programming. The Committee will meet approximately three times a semester, and lunch and treats will be served. Interested students should send a resume and a brief email expressing interest and availability to Ina Spaho at ispaho@law.harvard.edu by Monday, September 15th, 2014.

The Berkman Center for Internet & Society is seeking energetic, creative, and passionate students to apply for the Digital Problem-Solving Initiative (DPSI). DPSI is a University-wide initiative that brings together a diverse group of learners (students, faculty, fellows, and staff) to work on real-world projects that address problems and opportunities across the university – no experience necessary! DPSI offers all participants the opportunity to enhance and cultivate competency in various digital literacies as teams engage with research, design, and policy work relating to the Harvard community. As a student, you’ll have the opportunity to work with – and be mentored by – Harvard faculty, fellows, and staff in collaborative teams that will build and shape the increasingly digital environment in which we live, learn, work, and create. Furthermore, DPSI is about listening to student voices, empowering student-led teams to bring their ideas to fruition. The aim of The Workshop is to strengthen the next generation of scholars by placing them in collaboration with their global peers as they develop innovative ideas and alternative approaches to issues of global law, economic policy, social justice and governance. Prof. Rabb Seeks Research Assistant for ILSP Project on Islamic Law & Legal Education

Professor Intisar Rabb and the Islamic Legal Studies Program is seeking an HLS student to help research issues on Islamic law in higher education. In part, this work will consist of surveying the use of Islamic law syllabi and materials used in American law schools and graduate programs. The person chosen for the position will need to interact with and correspond with professors, identify relevant information to overall project, and organize the information for public presentation. Good interpersonal and communications skills, orientation to detail, and working knowledge of Excel preferred.
