“Nonprofit Row” loses historic shop

Looks like Temple Place, a/k/a “Nonprofit Row” (the “Ladder District
for nightlifers) will be losing the historic cutlery store, Stoddard’s.
Founded in 1800, Stoddard’s specializes in high-end knives and fishing
gear. Interesting trivia from the WBUR report: they were also the first
to import Raleigh bicycles from England.

I worked for a year next door to Stoddard’s and only went in there
once to look around. The folks there didn’t seem particularly friendly,
though I wasn’t shopping for anything in particular. At any rate,
Downtown Crossing isn’t the place to do that kind of specialty
retailing anymore, though the jewelry stores seem to be making out fine.
