The bling-bling, bang-bang, Chinatown bus

The Chinatown bus(es) between Boston and New York that we all know and love are apparently embroiled in gang warfare. LeftCenterLeft cites stories from Time Out NY and ABCNews about how drivers have been found shot and buses destroyed.

The good news: price wars are good for the consumer.

While we’re on the topic… immigrants with a bus and a dream can
manage to get from Boston to New York in under 4.5 hours (McDonald’s
stop included) for $10, while federally-subsidized Amtrak,
with its own rail line and no traffic, can barely do that for ten times
the price? Don’t get me wrong; I think rail travel is great. Still,
even taking into account the fact that the highways the Chinatown buses
use are also federally subsidized, and that Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor
is profitable and therefore not subsidized, is there something wrong with the price difference here? Hell, Greyhound can’t get you to New York for under $30.

  1. I don’t think anyone should be critical for what Cristian did. He was just doing his job, and was heroic at that for risking his own life to save another. People should not speak negatively about this tragedy. He is not here to defend himself anymore. I think certain individuals need to start being a little more sensitive to sad situations like this.
