Dave Winer’s whining about the WBUR
fund drive and suggests they create a special frequency for folks
who’ve already paid. Sounds like a good idea, maybe via streaming
radio, though I wonder if the additional overhead / streaming cost
would knock out the extra value. (Plus I’m unimpressed by the quality
of streaming radio).
I recall that in 1997, when I was living in New York, WNYC
managed to preempt their fund drive by running spots that promised no
pledge drive if they raised $X in the next 7 days. Well, it worked. Of
course, that was back when the economy was really picking up in New
York, and, well, New York has a lot more money than Boston.
(I did my duty and renewed my membership yesterday. Got my fingers crossed for that HDTV, though I have no clue where I’d put it!)
