In my opinion the clementine is the undiscovered hero of January. And this winter’s crop is unlike anything I’ve ever tasted before. If you have not eaten a celementine recently, please go and do so immediately.
(I hesitate to think of what bio-genetic mutation has been performed on Nature to create such a gem and choose to not meditate too deeply upon it…)
The experience of ingesting a clementine is multi-faceted. One starts with pealing the delicate, easily separated skin.
Ah….! a whiff of light orange fills the nostril.
Then one gently removes the few pulpy tendrils that still cling to the skin.
Finally the clementine is there as a perfect orb. One can easily pry apart the segments and pop them in ones mouth.
Utter joy!
Delight!

Where are you buying your clementines? I haven’t had many good ones this season. Maybe I was buying them too early. Is January the best month for clementines? When they’re good they’re like candy though!
The best ones I’ve had are from Johnnie Foodmaster here in Somerville. They were in an orange net bag. They were tastier than the ones that come in a box… Go for the bag…
Wow, go Johnny Foodmaster! Unfortunately, we don’t have those in the burbs. I’ve also never seen the clementines in a bag. I’ll have to check our local gourmet food/produce store, Idlewilde Farms.
