where do fairies live?

My daughter is starting to ask Difficult Questions this spring.

Last week it was death. WHY is Buffy (my mom’s elderly dog)
dead? Where IS he? Can you fix him? Many of Rada’s dolls and stuffed
animals ‘died’ this past week. Sometimes they were brought back to
life, sometimes not. It hasn’t been an easy concept for Rada to grasp.
(Is it for anyone?) I don’t know as I’ve answered the questions as clearly as I could
have.

Yesterday evening, however, she asked me about fairies. We had been
reading about the Blue Fairy in Pinocchio, the one that makes him into
a puppet-without-strings.  And Rada wanted to know where the Blue
Fairy went when she went to bed, and where she went when she was not
waving her magic wand. To tell you the truth, I was stumped. How do I
explain a magical creature in terms that are simple and concrete, yet
emphasizing that it is a magical, and thus fictional, creation? I
wished I’d paid more attention in my college comp lit course.

From the mouths of babes! So cute and good luck with your answers! I remember when my father-in-law passed away several years ago, my sweet niece asked my mother-in-law if they could go visit the swans again when Papa “came back from visiting God”. Guess she didn’t quite grasp the “death” thing just yet either!
