The Bug Trick

My daughter was in a state, sobbing. Apparently she was ‘not ready’ to brush her teeth and she did not want to wear any clothes to daycare. None. When I tried to reason with her she emphatically asserted that none of the kids at daycare wore clothes…

This happened 5 minutes before the moment when I really had better be on my way to work or risk getting in late to an important meeting, etc., etc.

So I tried something I’d read on the internet. I looked up randomly at the ceiling and said “Oh! Look! A bug!”. My daughter was instantly curious, looking at the phantom bug, trying to help me find it. We spent about a minute trying to find the bug, talking about where it might be and if it had flown away. Then I casually picked up my toothbrush, she picked up hers and we got the job done. Shortly after that, still chatting with her about the bug situation, I helped her into her clothes and we went out the door.

Wow. No other words but Wow. I really respect you for not losing your cool. I can’t imagine how I’ll react in those situations which are sure to come my way before I know it.

Thank you for the kind words, Stacy and Mary. This was one of my triumphs. I didn’t tell you about the day Rada had an all-out full-blown tantrum (kicking and screaming) on the floor in front of the Somerville Library Circulation Desk. It was not one of our more stellar moments…
Stacy, you’re going to be a great mom. Half of the love comes from good food. Your little bean is going to be happy to be Stacy’s boy!
