Its mid-October and there are several new styles appearing at the urban university where I work:
- Ski Parka with Flip Flops: I’ve seen many people embody this style. It is as if the subject were dressed for winter from the knees up and for summer from the knees down.
- Shorts with Mittens: This look is usually espoused by men. The fellow is wearing shorts and sneakers, with mittens and perhaps a woolen cap.
These styles highlight the inherent futility of planning for the weather in New England. But these fashion pioneers seem to embrace, by spanning the range from summer wear to winter wear, the hope of getting through the day with neither frostbite nor heatstroke (though I believe they’re actually leaving themselves susceptible to both.)
May the force be with them.

Don’t get me started with my opinion on the whole flip-flop phenomenon. Besides the cold weather, I’ve seen beautifully dressed young women and men on the T — business suits, skits and blouses, the works on top, wearing mangey flip-flops on their feet, exposing hairy toe knuckles and all. I can only hope that they had a change of shoes in their bags. Where are the fashion police when you need them?
Only in Cambridge! 🙂
