Being relatively new to twitter, I won’t be able to tell whether its crashing is an ordinary even or something outrageous. It did however make me worried.
This is an interesting question. I think other services would pop up to fill the void, but it would be fascinating to see how they would differ from Twitter. In one of my other classes we had a discussion about the idea of a network like Twitter just for teachers and I wonder if these sorts of smaller services for discrete communities would arise if Twitter stopped functioning.

Yes, I think in the long run, there certainly would be some company stepping in.
Immediately effect, though? Might be terrifying for ardent twitter users…
