When the second annual Rethink Music conference convenes this weekend in Boston, Harvard Cyberlaw Clinic assistant director Chris Bavitz will be moderating a panel about a problem that many artists and managers don’t even know they have — and suggesting, as a solution, one of the least sexy topics in popular music.

Bullying is a serious issue. Cries to do something—anything—have triggered new legislation, school assemblies, and pressure to punish those who hurt others. The tenor of the discussion is one of grave concern mixed with moral panic. As difficult as it is to step back and gain perspective, we must do so in order to actually address the problem. As researchers, we have found that misunderstandings undermine interventions.  With this in mind, we would like to offer five aspects of bullying that must be broadly understood in order to move from awareness to action.

The agreement with the prestigious private university in Japan follows the signing, in April 2011, of a partnership – after many years of collaboration – with the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. As part of the NEXA-Berkman collaboration, prof. De Martin recently spent five months at Harvard as Berkman Center faculty fellow. Also prof. Alessandro Mantelero, faculty fellow at the NEXA Center, is currently spending a month at the Berkman Center. The executive director of Berkman Center, prof. Urs Gasser, sits on the Board of Trustees of the NEXA Center.
