Update on the Microphone for the Webcast

ø

Over the weekend, Dave Winer reported on his test site that the Sony microphone he ordered for the Thursday meeting Webcast got lost, so he cancelled it. He’s asking for advice about mics and getting better quality audio for the Webcasts. If you have something to add to the discussion, please comment via his blog post.

BloggerCon 2

ø

Dave Winer posted a “reserve this date” notice for BloggerCon 2, tentatively scheduled for Saturday, April 10, 2004, and a brief description of the conference on the BloggerCon blog.

Addendum 2/23: Because of the conflicts with the Passover and Easter holidays, Dave is planning to move the date of the conference. He’s looking at Saturday, April 17th. Mike Walsh has already pointed out that the Boston Marathon on Monday, April 19th, might complicate matters because hotel rooms and flights might be difficult to find.

will play at the Middle East Club in Central Square, Cambridge,

    • Dinner, ice cream and pool while we killed time waiting for the 11 pm stage time, and the concert itself were a lot of fun. We actually got to talk to Dr. Frank for a little while during an opening band. j wasn’t the only librarian there, either.

New Omnidirectional Mic for the Webcast

ø

According to some e-mails on the discussion list for the Thursday group, Shimon found some omnidirectional microphones that should work better for the Webcast and Dave has ordered one. Perhaps it will be here in time for next week’s meeting.

2004/02/12 Proposed Agenda

4

Proposed agenda:

  • Will Dave report about his trip to Microsoft?
  • Will Jay report about his radio interview?
  • j can talk about a presentation she gave to a journalism class last night that ended up spending a good bit of time on weblogs and how professional journalists can use
  • Talk more about Salons
  • What’s the difference between the count on the rankings page and the hourly hits page? One is page reads and the other is … ?
  • Is there some way to address the problem that’s caused by RSS feeds without titles not appearing in the subscription list?
  • j’s RSS article is out. Her pointer
  • Eat
    • Border Cafe last week
    • Cambridge Common at 8:45

Post Notes:

  • Recordings
    • RealAudio Recording
      • The Webcast did not go well. Someone who tried listening to the audio file reports that it’s mostly buzzing.
  • Notes
  • Music
    • Reason #5 to go to dinners with the group: Joey, aka Accordion Guy (yes, the rumors about him carrying his accordion on his back wherever he goes seem to be true), stood at the end of the long table seating the 18-20 of us who went to dinner to play his accordion and sing. Some people at Cambridge Common knew the words and sang along. I saw a few bloggers photographing or filming the event, so images may be out there somewhere. Rumor has it Joey will attempt a rendition of Outkast’s Hey Ya for the first time soon.

IRC Transcripts of the Meetings

6

A few people have requested that we archive and post IRC transcripts of past meetings. When I mentioned this on IRC last week, a few people didn’t think posting transcripts was a good idea. Someone pointed out that it may not be appropriate to post transcripts when people who participated in the chat did not know from the beginning that transcripts could be archived and made available publicly. Someone else mentioned to me that some of the discussion on IRC is directly relevant to the meeting, but people at the meeting often don’t know about the discussion on IRC because no one reads it to those people physically present at the meeting and IRC is frequently not on the big screen where people at the meeting can read what’s happening.

Anything said at the meeting within the range of the microphone is archived as part of the Webcast. A few IRC transcripts from past meetings are available.

What do you think? Should IRC transcripts of the meetings be archived and made available publicly?
