親愛なる生徒の皆様へ

アメリカの地よりご挨拶申し上げます。私達は無事にアメリカに到着し、こちらの家族や友人達と有意義な時間を楽しく過ごしております。時差ボケがなくなれば、もっと爽快な気分になれると思います。

一旦飛行機に乗り込み、次に飛行機を降りる時には、すでに全くの別世界に到着しているというのは、本当に驚くべきことです。異なった文化とそこに住む人々に触れ合うという体験から学ぶべき最も重要な課題、それは、これは神様の世界であり、神様が創られた人々であり、私たちは世界の国々の人々を、真の神様を礼拝するように導く使命が与えられているという事です。

日曜日に私の母教会で、最近アメリカに移民したと言う中国系インドネシア人のご夫婦に会いました。彼らの母国は世界有数のイスラム教国ですが、彼らはクリスチャンで、彼らの母教会には3,000人が集っているそうです。彼らの母国では、クリスチャンに対する迫害は大変激しいものです。この二つの事実には関連性があると思います。教会史を学ぶと、私達は苦しみと迫害の後に、主が教会を大きく成長させてくださるという事実を見ることが出来ます。その苦しみと言うのは、個人の罪の結果や、クリスチャン・ノンクリスチャンに関わらず人類が体験する一般的な苦しみ（例えば、病気・経済的困難・災難など）ではなく、キリストに従うことによって起こる苦しみ、つまりキリストの苦しみです。

使徒の働きにこうあります。
彼らはその町で福音を宣べ、多くの人を弟子としてから、ルステラとイコニオムとアンテオケとに引き返して、弟子たちの心を強め、この信仰にしっかりとどまるように勧め、「私たちが神の国に入るには、多くの苦しみを経なければならない」と言った。 （使徒の働き１４章２１節－２２節）

苦しみと言うのは人生の一部なのではなく、むしろ神様の救いの計画の中の良い部分であるという事実を受け入れる時に、私たちは自分達のクリスチャン生活において真の自由を得、また私達の生活を通して成される神様のお働きを益々体験するのです。たとえ死の陰の谷を歩むとしても、キリストに信頼して従い続けるなら、以前にも増して、キリストが本物となり身近になる体験をするのです。あなたの人生が暗闇の王国を脅かすとき、敵は必死になってあなたを攻撃してきますが、その迫害によってむしろ神の国は成長するのです。

アメリカに戻る前日に、ある友人のお母様のお見舞いのために病院に行きました。彼女は危篤状態でした。その家族は８年間もの間ずっと、私の家族に大変良くしてくれていました。病院で、彼女は私のことをまるで自分の息子のようだと言ってくれました。

彼女はイエス様を信じると宣言しつつも、日本の神々にも従い続けると言っていました。私は、キリストがその掛け替えのない素晴らしい愛によって与えてくださった罪の問題に対する解決について証し、彼女を励ましました。話し終わった後、私は彼女のために祈りました。友人が言うには、彼女は最近見せたことのない最高の笑みを浮かべたそうです。私を息子と呼んでくれた彼女を、私はそっと抱きしめました。私達がアメリカに到着した翌日、彼女は亡くなりました。

現時点では、日本に3,000人が集う教会が建てられるよう祈り、その希望に胸を膨らませるのみです。たった一人の罪人がキリストに立ち返ることは奇跡であり、たった一人の罪人がキリストを知らずに死んでいくことは非常に大きな悲しみです。私の友人の母親が福音を受け入れたという希望を捨ててはいませんが、実際のところは私には分かりません。私達は、多くの国々で教会が成長させられていった神様の偉大な御業を再び見ることが出来るよう祈るべきであり、またその特権が与えられているのです。その日まで、クリスチャンとノンクリスチャンの両方を含め、神様が私達の人生に与えてくださった人々に対して誠実に生きていくことを求められています。今日という日は、その日をただ待ち望む一日ではなく、その日に向けて準備をする一日でなくてはならないのです。

彼らは、新しい歌を歌って言った。
「あなたは、巻き物を受け取って、その封印を解くのにふさわしい方です。あなたは、ほふられて、その血により、あらゆる部族、国語、民族、国民の中から、神のために人々を購（われました）。」 （ヨハネの黙示録５章９節）

約束された方は真実な方ですから、私たちは動揺しないで、しっかりと希望を告白しようではありませんか。　（ヘブル人への手紙１０章２３節 ）

Beloved students,

Hello from America! We’ve arrived safely and are enjoying time with family and friends. Once jetlag is over we’ll feel even better!

It’s amazing that you can step on a plane, off a plane and into a totally different world. I think the best lesson we can learn from this exposure to different cultures and peoples is that this is GOD’S world, these are people that GOD created, and these are nations that we should call to the worship of the true God.

At my home church on Sunday I met an Indonesia Chinese couple who had recently moved to America. They were Christians and even though their nation is the largest Muslim nation in the world their home church is nearly 3000 people! It is also a nation of great persecution of Christians. I believe that these two things are related. As we learned in church history the Lord has often grown the church after a season of great suffering and persecution. Not a suffering from one’s own sins or a “common” suffering that all people experience whether Christian or not (such as sickness, financial difficulty or calamity), but a suffering that comes because of following Christ – Christ’s suffering.

We read in the book of Acts:

Acts 14:21 They preached the good news in that city and won a large number of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch, Acts 14:22 strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. “We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,” they said.

As we accept the fact that suffering is not only a part of life but a good part of God’s plan of salvation we are able to have great freedom in the Christian life and God is able to more freely do a work in our lives. As we trustingly follow Christ even into the valley of the shadow of death we will find that Christ is more real and more close than we’ve ever known before. Enemies will press in more fiercely as your life threatens the kingdom of darkness, and from that persecution, the Kingdom will grow.

The day before I returned to America I was called to the hospital to visit a friend’s mother who was dying. Their family has been so kind to mine for 8 years. In the hospital her mother called me her son.

While her mother stated that she believed in Jesus, she also said that she continued to follow the gods of Japan. I shared my testimony briefly and encouraged her to see the uniqueness of the work of Christ in dealing with our great problem of sin with an incomparable love. After we talked I prayed for her. My friend said that her mother smiled a bigger smile than she had in a long time. I hugged her as she called me her son. The day after we returned to America she died.

For now we can only pray and imagine a church of 3000 in Japan. Even one sinner who turns to Christ is a miracle and a sinner who dies without Christ a great sadness. I believe there is still hope that my friend’s mother accepted the Gospel, but I don’t know. We can and should pray for a great work of God and that one day the church might see amazing growth as it has in many nations. Until that day we should be faithful with the few that the Lord has put into our lives – both Christians and non-Christians. Today is not that day that we hope for, but today is the day that we must prepare for such a day.

Rev. 5:9 And they sang a new song: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.

Heb. 10:23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.
