Because You Asked

Copiously weeping cats today. This first is from Heinrich Hoffman’s sadistic children’s book, “Struwwelpeter” (c. 1845). It’s a very normative book – there’s some German word for this type of kinderbuch but I can’t remember it. This particular picture is from “Das Gar Traurige Geschichte mit dem Feuerzeug” or as Mark Twain translated it, “The Sad Tale of the Match-Box”. In which Paulinchen learns to her cost, too late, that matches are actually not fun at all. And she can’t even say the cats didn’t warn her.

“Come quick!” they said. “O sire.
Your darling child’s afire!
Me-yow! Me-yo! Me-yow! Me-yo!
She’s cinders, soot, and ashes, O!”

Twain’s translation is available wicked cheap as one of those cute little Reclam editions, #8983.

The unhappy critter below is one of Charles Robinson’s illustrations from Walter Jerrold’s 1903 “Big Book of Nursery Rhymes” – available these days as “Mother Goose’s Nursery Rhymes” from good ol’ Everyman’s Library.

Pussycat Mew jumped over a coal,
And in her petticoat burnt a big hole.
Poor Pussy’s weeping, she’ll have no more milk,
Until her best petticoat’s mended with silk!

Robinson is better known for his illustrations of Stevenson’s “Child’s Garden of Verses”, and a lot of the “Mother Goose” illustrations delve into the same art nouveau vibe as the “Child’s Garden”. One Jim Vadeboncoeur, Jr. has set out an interesting life of Robinson here, with pictures to look at.

The RSS summary for this entry reads: “‘girlonfire’ Twain’s translation is available…” which I was sure was telling me the title of Twain’s book, and I was thinking that e. e. cummings had perhaps not introduced much to the language if Twain had already done that much.

Then we have “‘catweepeth’ Robinson is better known for his illustrations…” and I thought that was a pretty funny nickname that you were giving such a fellow…

This is an artifact of the way Manila does images. When you upload an image to the blogs.law server you give it a string identifier. When you use that string, enclosed in quotes, on a post, blogs.law interpolates some sort of <img src=””> business. I guess it must not be doing that for the RSS summaries!

I agree that “catweepeth” would be a pretty dope nickname for Robinson 🙂

This Magic Moment-Remember when you began dating your wife or girlfriend? Those moments when the touch of her hair, the wisp of a kiss or the electricity you felt when holding hands? Do you still feel the same way or do you feel that you are missing some of those feelings?Of course you still love your mate, probably more than ever before, but unfortunately most of the excitement has, somehow, disappeared. You have fallen into the same day, in, day out, doldrums. Time has passed and you are into a routine, and by doing so have lost that special feeling you got just by smelling her scent or hearing her voice.Well, stop thinking about “what was” and start putting some of the excitement and romance back into your life !Many successful couples, who have been together for many years, know the secret of a successful relationship is always finding ways to keep it fresh, and what I am going to discuss is just one way that you can put the “oomph” back into your lives .Have you ever felt the smoothness and delicate touch that a silk blouse gives. That shimmery fabric which is so delicate to the touch and sexy, clinging to her body? It is no wonder that the sexiest looking lingerie is made of silk or a satiny material. So, why not give your loved one a delicate item to share with you in the bedroom. Watch her as she wears this item and as she caresses you with the feel of the garment against your skin. This, for sure, can bring excitement to your life but there is something else you can share equally, which should give you even more pleasure and a sense of heightened desire. That “something else” is satin sheets. The smoothness of the fabric, cool against your skin, as your bodies glide across this wonderful material, creating a sensual and exciting moment. Wow, it is such a turn-on!Prepare the moment by putting these fantastic feeling sheets on your bed. Have some sexy lingerie laid out for your mate and light some scented candles to set the mood.
