Up and a way

Sitting by Gate 88 at SFO, waiting to board United’s next Boston flight. I just took my chances and ordered a short dry decaf cappuccino. I figured I had a good chance of getting what I wanted because the coffee shop at the gate is Peets, of which I am quite fond because more often than not they make them right.

Not this time. Even with careful instruction (“just some foam and a tiny bit of milk on the espresso”), I got what remains the default for coffee shops everywhere, and which I’ve complained about before.

It’s cool. I just met Tony Mamone, founder of Zimbio, who introduced himself after he heard my name called for an upgrade. Fun coincidence.

So now I’m sitting in seat 1a: a biz class window on the shady side of the plane with no obstructions. The window could be cleaner, but it’s not too bad. The shooting should be good.

  1. yeah… well some of us don’t think that Cappuccino’s are made with Decaf… 😉

Sorry they don’t know how to make drinks over there… try Ritual Roaster’s some time. They make some yummy espresso(of course they aren’t in the airport 🙁 )

  2. I don’t know if you’ve seen this, but if you’ve got problems with the state of your cappucino and your window could be cleaner, you’ve really got to check it out and take it to heart.

  3. Clay,

I only ordered decaf in this case because (if picture-taking were not an option) I wanted to be able to sleep on the plane. Otherwise, ‘caf it is.

I’m having a home-brew cappuccino right now. Full strength. 🙂

  4. Doc, apparently asking for short capuccino at Starbucks should do the trick (on the occasion you can’t do Peets and have to fall back on Starbucks). 🙂

  5. That’s my usual hack. The problem is, many starbucks don’t have the short cup, and give you a “tall” anyway. One shot of espresso and the rest milk. Very frustrating. But yes, that’s the hack.

  6. While Peet’s is not known for their espresso drinks (out here, they are known as places to get good drip coffee), they do usually make a decent cappuccino. Their terminology is to order a “traditional cappuccino”. I found this out when they had placards out advertising that option a few years ago.
