Clutch Cargo

Every year, 2,000 to 10,000 trailer-sized containers fall off cargo ships
and into the ocean. As container ships get larger, insurers and scientists
are investigating whether design flaws cause them to roll out of control
in rough seas. The ocean subjects ships to six different pushing and rotating
forces.

So littered is the ocean with container flotsam that two scientists now
track ocean currents based on where shoes, toys, and doll heads wash up
on shore.
