Judge Gives Birth While Standing on Train

Joyce M. Judge, the woman who gave birth on the Red Line but refused assistance from passengers and police, is being committed to a psychiatric facility for further evaluation, officials of the state Department of Social Services said yesterday.

Judge, a former nurse, was riding the inbound train when she delivered a full-term baby, standing up, between the North Quincy and the JFK-UMass stops. As some shocked passengers implored Judge to let them help her and others frantically called State Police on their cellphones, Judge repeatedly and politely refused aid.

…another example of judicial independence, from the Boston Globe
