Hey Donald is a very good friend of mine, and he told me that he was 15 when this happened!!
I was there the day it happened. He was only a freshman…14, 15 at most. It was absolutely horrific. They had to get a helicopter in the school’s field to take him to Boston. The only reason he’s alive today is one of the teachers broke regulations and actually used the fire extinguisher.
At first, everyone thought it was pyrotechnics and it didn’t quite register what was happening, but it didn’t take long to realize what was going on as he ran down the bleachers from the very top. The image will forever be burned into my memory (pun unintentended).
The thing that got me was that even after everything, Donald still extended his hand, so to speak, in forgiveness of the boy that lit him on fire from behind. It blows your mind…
