Blessed by a Goddess

ø

Doctors and experts are baffled by an Indian hermit who claims not
to have eaten or drunk anything for several decades – but is still in perfect
health. Mr Prahlad Jani under surveillance in hospital.

Prahlad Jani, a holy man, or fakir, who is over 70 years old, has just
spent 10 days under constant observation in Sterling Hospital, in the western
Indian city of Ahmedabad.

During that time, he did not consume anything and "neither did he
pass urine or stool", according to the hospital’s deputy superintendent,
Dr Dinesh Desai.

Yet he is in fine mental and physical fettle, say doctors. Most people
can live without food for several weeks, with the body drawing on its fat
and
protein stores. But the average human can survive for only
three to four days without water.

At the end of his confinement, doctors noted no deterioration in his
condition, other than a slight drop in his weight. "I feel no need
for food and water," says Mr Jani, who claims
he was blessed by a goddess at the age of eight and has lived in caves
ever
since.

A view of "Moai" statues in Ahu Akivi, on Easter Island, 4,000
km (2486 miles) west of Santiago, in this photo taken October 31, 2003.
Easter Island’s mysterious "Moai", giant head statues carved
out of volcanic rock, are in danger of being destroyed by years of tropical
rains and wind as well as careless humans and farms animals. Experts have
called on the international community to commit funds to preserve the monoliths,
whose mystery draws tourists to the world?s most remote inhabited island.

Caretakers of the cracked and crumbling Moai fret that a piece of history
is deteriorating before their eyes.

"Something must be done immediately. If the Moai are destroyed, the island
is destroyed because without tourism this island is nothing," said
Rapa Nui expert Francesco Di Castri, former deputy director of the U.N.
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and former
president of the World Science Institute.

Snowflake Dies

ø

MADRID,
Nov 24 (Reuters) – Spain on Monday bade farewell to the world’s only
known albino gorilla, Snowflake, a national favourite who died after
a long struggle with skin cancer. The main attraction at Barcelona zoo
since he was brought there 37 years ago from Equatorial Guinea, Snowflake’s
fight with cancer made front-page
news in Spain and brought thousands of well-wishers of all ages to see
him.

Jordi Portabella, the zoo’s director, told a news conference that Snowflake
died early on Monday after veterinarians decided to have the animal put
down to avoid further pain. His skin cancer was first discovered in 2001.
Queues stretched for hours outside Snowflake’s enclosure in the months
before
his death. But the 140 kg (310 lb) giant, pumped full of painkillers
and anti-depressants to ease his suffering, often preferred to turn his
back on onlookers.

If you like your news direct from the source, or if you at least like to position the horse’s mouth somewhere in your surround-sound stream of informational inputs, you should check out Michael Jackson’s brand new self-defense Blog. I call it a blog because it is in, yes – reverse chronological order. If you’re gonna read the rabid media lynch mob, you should read what the guy himself has to say, too.

The Doctor is in the House

The
latest, typically savage "Sports" column from the eminent Dr. Hunter
S. Thompson:

Professional football is not the only pillar of Faith that is crumbling
all around us, as we stumble nervously into this new and merciless century.
Even our world-famous Military power is visibly failing us. If we get
chased out of Iraq with our tail between our legs, that will be the fifth
consecutive Third-world country with no hint of a Navy or an Air Force
to have whipped us in the past 40 years.

If the U.S. had a national Football team with a record like that, we
would have fired the Coach a long time ago. Nobody can lose all the time
and still stay in power. Even Adolf Hitler was forced to kill himself
after personally destroying the proud nation of Germany and turning it
into a helpless Nazi whorehouse.
