Blog the Conventions

Tonight’s Big Idea from the Thursday
Night Berkman Blogger’s Group
meeting, was Blog the Conventions. Modesty prevents the Dowbrigade
from mentioning the source of the inspiration, but it suddenly occurred
to us, in the middle of a prolonged post-mortem of the Dean Debacle,
that the next crucial act of this drama would be played out RIGHT HERE
in Boston, in late July, when the Democratic National Convention pulls
into the Fleet Center.

Already the anti-globalization, anti-big politics, anti-war activists
and anarchists have started meeting to prepare their disruptive strategies,
and the forces of order are trying to infiltrate them. Major Media, not just US but worldwide, will be out in force. For a week in July, all
eyes will be on Boston, and the Coronation of John Kerry, inside the Sports
Palace, while the human Movement swirls around on the streets outside.

It BEGS to be blogged! The simultaneous developments inside and outside
the Hall, and the interface between the two worlds, will have a lot to
say about the ultimate significance, if not the outcome, of the election
of 2004. The Berkman Center and its Blogging Crew will be uniquiely positioned
to facilitate and coordinate the Blogging of the Convention, helping
bloggers find lodging, get access, and offer comprehensive coverage.
Limited blogger’s access to the convention floor is already being negotiated.

The very astute observation was made that if we plan to blog the Democrats
we should also blog the Republicans.  Our initial reaction was that
the Democratic Convention stands to be much more exiciting than the Republican
version (in New York).  But then we realized, hell, both of these
shindigs are going to basically be coronations, and the absolute apex
of American political theater.  They need to be Blogged together.

The Dowbrigade is very much looking forward to this July in Boston.  The
circus is coming to town, and it will be Blogged.
