Popeye ‘Puter to be Powered by Spinach

Researchers
at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology say they have used spinach
to harness a plant’s ability to convert sunlight into energy for the
first time, creating a device that may one day power laptops, mobile
phones and more.

Why spinach?

In reality, any number of plants could have been used. But the researchers
chose spinach because "it is cheap and is easily available from
the grocery store," Zhang said

Practical applications are still a decade or so away,
but the advantages include the technology’s lightweight qualities, portability
and environmental
friendliness. "There is no waste," Zhang said.
