A gunshot rocked the Jeremiah E. Burke Jr.High School in Dorchester yesterday
when a student accidentally dropped his handgun in a second-floor hallway.

A student was pulling his jacket on and in the course of doing that,
a gun fell out of his jacket and hit the ground and discharged a bullet,”
said Boston Public Schools spokesman Jonathan Palumbo. “Which luckily
and thankfully did not hit anybody.”

A teacher emerged from a classroom to investigate the shot and saw
a student grab the gun and run away with another student.

Both students are 19. School officials have passed on information
gathered from the witness and from cameras positioned in the stairway to
Boston police, Palumbo said.
Metal detectors are installed at the school, but were being used randomly.

`It gets to the point where there’s a rush to get kids in on time,
so they start using them randomly as a deterrent,” Palumbo said.
