Is Nothing Sacred?

The Looney Tunes characters – six in all – have been "reimagined" (in
studio parlance) for a new series called "Loonatics," which
is set to air next fall on WPIX/Channel 11 as part of the Saturday morning
Kids’ WB program lineup.

The show features new versions of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Wile E. Coyote, the
Tasmanian Devil, Road Runner and Lola Bunny (the newest of the characters, who
was introduced in the 1996 Michael Jordan movie "Space Jam").

For "Loonatics," the six characters are being projected 700 years into
the future, given superpowers, and outfitted in tight-fitting, slenderizing space
gear.

Is nothing sacred? We thought Bugs Bunny was a timeless icon of American
insouciance. Having him shoot hoops with Michael Jordan was marginally
acceptable, as Michael was sort of a cartoon character himself, but this
is blasphemy. For example, everyone knows cartoon characters have three
fingers, as opposed to human (let me count) um, five. What are those
curvy yellow claws supposed to suggest? They look like the razors strapped
to roosters claws in a cock fight! Honestly, we pity the kids growing
up today. It’s a cruel and violent, rapine world in which the Loony Tuners
have to slash and smash to survive.

Eh. After Animaniacs (“We’re loony! We’re toony!”), does it really matter?

“It’s a cruel and violent, rapine world in which the Loony Tuners have to slash and smash to survive.”

    Anvil. Wile E. Coyote.

But cheer up: I give this thing six months before they realize what a stupid idea it is and cancel it.
