All In In the Desert

CITY (Reuters) – A group of stranded illegal immigrants facing death in
the parched Arizona desert saved themselves by using a cell phone they
found to call rescue services, the U.S. Border Patrol said Thursday.

The group got lost in the desert near Arivaca, south of Tucson, Arizona,
Wednesday after their guide abandoned them during a four-day trek across
the border from Mexico.

Lost and low on water, they used a cell phone they found in their guide’s
bag to dial 911. Rescuers dispatched helicopters and located the group
in the desert shortly after sunset.

"Their quick thinking in using the phone to call for help and lighting
signal fires saved their lives," the Tucson Sector of the U.S. Border
Patrol said in a news release.

We’ll bet that unfortunate coyote is never heard from again. It’s
an infernal hell, out there in the no-man’s-land of the Arizona-Mexico
border, where only the most desperate and optionless cross, an death lurks
in the shadowless noon and the frigid pitch midnight. Out there the ecosystem
consists of the desperate dreamers, those who prey on them, and the US
Border Patrol. That is, until the Minute
Men (and women) are allowed to enter the mix, in which case all bets
are off.

Frankly, if the entire membership of the NRA joined the National
Guard on the border, armed to the teeth and buzzed on Aderol, it wouldn’t
stop the flood of illegal immigrants. Hell, coming across the desert,
or through open seas in leaking scows and listing rafts, they are already
facing death just to get a crack at the American Dream.

Just as my ancestors did, escaping from from Eastern Europe one step
ahead of the Pogroms. For most Americans today giving up their club membership
or EZ-Pass is unthinkable, and the idea of giving up everything they own
and everybody they know is insane. When enough individual human beings
are ready to risk everything, up to life itself, to realize a realistic
dream, they cannot be stopped. That was the principal on which this country
was created, and it will be the rock on which it flounders.
