This project focuses on encouraging the use of open technical standards, protocols and APIs and on having configuration files that carry open content licenses. It presents an example of what a modular DPLA software architecture might look like and discusses API requirements.
The proposal asserts that a modular software architecture is needed for the DPLA to support collaborative development, service diversity, and the re-usability of core components across all variations. The modular architecture proposed is neutral with respect to software tools, protocols, standards, content and metadata formats, content and metadata storage locations, indexing practices, and end-user functionality.
