Luxury for the Masses
Thank you, Gap Corp., for making cashmere jump the shark.
This is akin to the sandwashed silk shirt craze of the early 90s,
wherupon Target began selling silk blouses for under $20. Silk
has never recovered in my esteem.

You seriously don’t enjoy the same fabric–which has not changed in its texture, its look, its softness, its pliability,–as much because other people now have it for cheap? 😉 I just can’t imagine silk ever droppipng in my esteem. For one thing, “cheap” silk is a matter of scale and perspective and location, but for another it’s silk. I’d take it for free if I could, and just take more.

No, as my dozen-plus cashmere sweaters will attest, I still adore the fabric. But, I don’t want cashmere v-necks (an office stable of mine) to become this year’s tech pants or polar fleece.
