The Clean Water Act at 40, October 11-12, 2012

National Geographic Society Freshwater Fellow Sandra Postel delivers Friday’s lunch address.

Harvard was home to water experts from across the country this week when ELP and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) hosted a conference to mark the 40th anniversary of the Clean Water Act.

Kicking off with a keynote speech by former EPA Administrator William Reilly ’65, the conference brought together leading figures in water law and policy from government, academia, non-profits, and the private sector.

After Thursday’s keynote and dinner, the participants spent Friday in panels and group discussions, examining the Act’s successes and failures and looking ahead to the next forty years and beyond. Sandra Postel, Freshwater Fellow at the National Geographic Society, gave the lunch address.  Conference participants included key political appointees responsible for the Act’s passage and administration over the last forty years, leading academics, and members of state and national NGOs.
