The Technical University of Munich* – “Help! The Universities (in Germany) Are Falling Apart!” – 8

The Ruhr University Bochum is another example. During the preparations for the annual summer festival last year, a fork lift broke through the paving slabs on the university’s central plaza and then had to be recovered with another machine. The slabs were dilapidated and had been carelessly laid down in the first place. The rattling sound caused by anyone or anything passing over them, belongs to one of the “typical campus noises,” according to the university press office.

At its current ranking, the Technical University of Munich is not so very far behind many universities in, for example, East Asia. Oder in Bochum: Dort brach in diesem Jahr bei den Vorbereitungen des Sommerfestes ein Gabelstapler auf dem zentralen Platz der Uni ein und musste geborgen werden. Die Bodenplatten waren marode und schlecht verlegt. Dass sie beim Darüberlaufen klappern, gehöre zum “typischen Campus-Sound” der Ruhr-Universität, heißt es im dortigen Pressereferat.
