The German Ministry of Health and German physicians’ associations have awarded a prize to a partly plagiarized book. The jury knew about the bogus work. Why did they award the prize anyway?

*According to The Times of London, in its Higher Education Supplement [THES], World University Rankings, 2012-2013, (http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/2013-14/world-ranking) the Technical University of Munich, officially recognized by the German government as an “elite university,” is ranked 87 overall among the world’s universities. At its current ranking, the Technical University of Munich is not so very far behind many universities in, for example, East Asia. It is now only thirty-seven places behind China’s Tsinghua University (ranked 50 in the world), only thirty places behind the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (ranked 57 in the world), only forty-two places behind Peking University (ranked 45 in the world), only sixty-one places behind the National University of Singapore (ranked 26 in the world), only twenty-seven places behind Korea’s Pohang University of Science and Technology (ranked 60 in the world), and, for another comparison, only eighty-two places behind the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (ranked 5 in the world).
