Calling All Movie Buffs!

11 April 2018 15 responses John Overholt Collections in Focus

UPDATE: The response to this post was so great we’ve posted 25 new unidentified movie stills–let us know if you can help!

We recently cataloged a collection of several hundred film stills as part of the Ludlow-Santo Domingo Library. Many identify the film or actor depicted, but to make this collection as useful as possible to researchers, we’d love your help identifying those with no caption. If you recognize the film or stars in these images, please leave a comment below, and be sure to give the number of the photo you’re referring to.

Photograph 4 looks like something from “The Hideous Sun Demon” (1958).

3 and 9 are from The Unknown (1927) with Lon Chaney. Others might be, too, but I haven’t seen the film in years.

Photograph 8 appears to be from Planets Around Us: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055297/ from this bit of the movie: https://youtu.be/ALuK9rpspb8?t=1h23m59s

I agree with the previous commenters on The Unknown for Photographs 3 and 9 and The Hideous Sun Demon for 4 and 5.

Photograph 7 is from The Curse of Frankenstein with Peter Cushing.

Photograph 10 is from The Phantom of the Opera (1943).

Photograph 11 is from Mill of the Stone Women.

I’m not sure, but I think Photograph 2 may be from Circus of Horrors.

I believe #1 is Jean Marais, the French actor.

No. 2 appears to be from BLACK ZOO.
No. 1o is from THE THIEF OF BAGDAD (1940 version)

Image 6 is a scene from Thief of Bagdad from 1947. The sultan is winding a key on the back of a mechanical horse that flys with the magical help of the sorcerer Jaffar.

The woman lying on pillow looking up is Sherry Jackson, popular young actress on TV from early 60’s through the 70’s.

Oops! Thief of Bagdad was released in 1940, not 1947…. Forgot to put film in the photograhic memory. 🙂

Next time I’ll check my facts better.

Thief of Baghdad is from 1940, not 1947. Otherwise, I believe you’re correct.
