You’ve Got Mail: Send some mail of your own!

15 June 2012 John Overholt Uncategorized

“You’ve Got Mail”… Isn’t that such a nice thing to hear and doesn’t it feel good when friends and family take the time to reach out to you with a good old-fashioned notecard? Please take a moment to stop by the lobby at Houghton Library where you will find a collection of notecards for sale ($2 each and self-serve). Here is a sampling of the most recent notecards printed from items in our collection…

Edward Lear’s Study of a European Hedgehog, ca. 1831-1836, and part of a stunning exhibition in the Edison and Newman Room through August 18th, “The Natural History of Edward Lear”–not to be missed!

John James Audubon’s Ivory Billed Woodpeckers, 28 November 1812, and a popular favorite, Belted Kingfisher, 15 July 1808.

And three items that can be seen during the weekly 2:00 p.m. tour on Fridays, including the portrait by John Opie of Dr. Samuel Johnson, The Dickinson Children by Otis A. Bullard, and the handsome portrait of Herman Melville by Joseph Oriel Eaton.

Portraits of Samuel Johnson (82M-20), Herman Melville (61Z-4), and the Dickinson children.

This post is part of a weekly feature on the Houghton Library blog, “You’ve Got Mail,” based on letters in Houghton Library. Every Friday this year a Houghton staff member will select a letter from the diverse collections in the Library and put that letter into context. All posts associated with this series may be viewed by clicking on the You’veGotMail tag.
