Another Designer

Okay guys, here is a 2nd designer, Diane Connell of southern CA, USA. We are actually going to limit you to two choices because it is just slightly too exhausting for me to go chasing down every graphic designer on the planet that wants to doctor your photo because he/she believes deeply in Humanism.

So here is the question: Diane is more experienced than Elizabeth, whose stuff is below. But she will charge us 2x more. We could possibly afford her, but only if you think her design is much stronger. One thing in Diane’s favor is that later in the year, we will be needing much more professional flyers than what we need right now, and it seems that Diane has much more experience with this. But again, do we need her?

Keep in mind, again, that both designers are just supplying drafts. Professional designers generally take (& require) a lot of detailed feedback in order to do their best work. As far as Sean Bala’s interesting suggestion of including descriptions of the celebrities, we could direct people to HSS’s page on the (soon to debut) chaplaincy site, which could list them somewhere along with a link to celebatheists.com, instead of, as currently, just directing them to celebatheists. Or not.

I think it’s clear that the second designs blow the first out of the water. On the other hand, like you implied, it is important to question how integral professional-looking advertising would be. Can we hire Elizabeth now

(sorry, my computer froze on me and the above comment was accidentally posted unfinished; I’ll just continue it here). Is it possible to hire Elizabeth now for jobs in the near future for which less polished work is acceptable and then look to Diane for tasks that demand more refinement? If it’s not feasible to employ the two designers on a case-by-case basis, then I’d have to go with Elizabeth, as being able to churn out twice as many projects as Diane at the same cost might have more impact than being able to develop extremely eye-catching work (because it’d have to be at least twice as eye-catching to be cost-effective, and I just don’t see college students–even those at Harvard :-) –having such picky taste… though the profs and members of the surrounding community might be another story ;-D).

This evaluation is based on the assumption that each designer would be paid by the project, not the hour. If the latter were the case, however, a more experienced employee like Diane might pay for herself by being a more efficient worker, so the “twice as much work for half the cost” benefit of Elizabeth might not actually hold up in reality.

I really like the layout of this second design. Maybe we could have a few more heads of celebrities stuck in – another row in front of the windows at the back, kind of Sgt. Pepper’s album cover style. Having the picture smaller and the various descriptions/contacts/etc. on different frames really looks professional.

I love this design. I think that its eye-catching and gets the message across in an informed and unobtrusive way. Absolutely brilliant, I wouldn’t change a thing.
