Iowa Flood Blog & Flickr Photostream

The recent midwest flooding has hit Iowa particularly hard. My thoughts are with those whose lives have been directly affected. I also, however, want to recognize the University of Iowa‘s particularly effective use of Web 2.0 tools to document the ongoing crisis and the university’s response: they have been maintaining a very informative flood blog and posting a pretty amazing set of photos on Flickr. It looks like the water is beginning to recede around the Iowa campus, which likely means the beginning of what will hopefully not be too protracted a summer cleanup.

  1. I was in Iowa City for a conference (where the university is) when the flood hit, was evacuated from my riverside accommodations, and got some photos myself:

I was able to get out of Iowa City last Saturday (not easy, with many of the roads closed, including the one to the main Iowa City airport… which is in the hard-hit Cedar Rapids). Thanks for these other links… I have found the University of Iowa’s site very helpful, but otherwise have been frustrated at the lack of information. I now have good friends there, and want to keep tabs on them. Disasters are inherently confusing, though, I guess. River did crest yesterday and is beginning, at last, to recede… but yes, it will be a long summer for them, I fear.

  2. Our prayers are with you Iowa…. Here’s a little something I coaught crossing the internet waves ….lets you know what America is wondering about, regarding this flood disaster.

A couple questions from The National Review:

Where are all of the Hollywood celebrities holding telethons asking for help in restoring Iowa and helping the folks affected by the floods?

Where is all the media asking the tough questions about why the federal government hasn’t solved the problem? Asking where the FEMA trucks (and trailers) are?

Why isn’t the Federal Government relocating Iowa people to free hotels in Chicago?

When will Spike Lee say that the Federal Government blew up the levees that failed in Des Moines?

Where are Sean Penn and the Dixie Chicks?

Where are all the looters stealing high-end tennis shoes and big screen television sets?

When will we hear Governor Chet Culver say that he wants to rebuild a ‘vanilla’ Iowa, because that’s the way God wants it?

Where is the hysterical 24/7 media coverage complete with reports of cannibalism?

Where are the people declaring that George Bush hates white, rural people?

How come in 2 weeks, you will never hear about the Iowa flooding ever again?
