Protecting and Promoting Human Rights: The Role of a National Ombudsman

On Monday, December 3, International Legal Studies (along with the Harvard European Law Association and the Human Rights Program) will host a talk with Emily O’Reilly, Ombudsman and Information Commissioner for The Republic of Ireland.

Ms. O’Reilly  is currently serving a second six-year term in this role. The function of the Ombudsman is to investigate complaints from members of the public who believe that they have been unfairly treated by certain public bodies. The Ombudsman also examines complaints about failures by public bodies to provide accessible buildings, services and information. Before her initial appointment as Ombudsman and Information Commissioner in June 2003, Ms O’Reilly was an accomplished journalist and author whose roles included many years as a political correspondent with prominent print and broadcasting media. She was also the recipient of a Nieman Fellowship in Journalism at Harvard.

The presentation will take place at 12 p.m. in Milstein West B, Wasserstein Hall.
