The World Social Forum, held in Bombay, India, concluded today with a seven kilometer march. More than 100,000 people attended the different panels on globalization, human rights, and other issues.
Victims of state abuses from Punjab, Gujarat, Kashmir and Nagaland all spoke at the panel on Fighting Impunity in India. Mrs. Paramjit Kaur, the wife of Jaswant Singh Khalra, represented Punjab, along with human rights defender Amrik Singh, co-author of Reduced to Ashes. Other panelists included Brad Adams, Executive Director, Asia Division, Human Rights Watch, and retired High Court Justice H. Suresh.
The Lawyers Collective also organized a panel on State and Individual Accountability for Crimes related to Genocide and Torture: Reconciling the international with the National. The Confederation of Human Rights Organisations, which organized a panel on Kashmir, had issued a press release detailing threats it received prior to the World Social Forum.
