Fallout from Gujarat reaches US

January 26, 2004 | Comments Off on Fallout from Gujarat reaches US

The BBC today has an article, titled “Fallout from Gujarat reaches US.”  The article discusses attempts made within the Indian diaspora to reach out to different religious communities, among a growing debate on Hindutva.  The article describes the Vishwa Hindu Parisad (VHP) in general terms, and largely ignores the role of the party in hate propaganda and violence against minorities in India.  It also incorrectly uses the word “riots” to describe what was an organized campaign of violence against Muslims in Gujarat in the spring of 2002:

A large contingent of the worshippers is from Gujarat – the state in western India that was engulfed by sectarian riots early in 2002.

Up to 2,000 people were killed – most of them Muslims.
