Lawyers Claim Rights Violations in Jailbreak Detentions

Human rights lawyers met in Chandigarh to discuss the detentions of human rights defenders in the recent arrests related to the Jan. 22 jailbreak discussed in yesterday’s post.  The meeting was led by A.S. Chahal, the president of Lawyers for Human Rights International and advocate for one of the accused who escaped.

The police have also obtained permission to hold Narain Singh in custody until February 9.  The defense counsel for Narain Singh stated that he was in Gurdaspur during the jailbreak, and not in Chandigarh as the police claimed:

Opposing the remand, the counsel for Chaura said that the conspiracy behind the escape involves jail officials and the Chaura had merely gone to attend the proceedings of the Beant Singh assassination case in the special court on January 16 and 17. This, the defence counsel argued, is not illegal.

He claimed that Chaura was in Gurdaspur on January 22, the day of the escape. He also said that the records of Chaura’s mobile phone, now with police, would prove his claim.
