Questionable Developments in Jailbreak Investigations

February 9, 2004 | Comments Off on Questionable Developments in Jailbreak Investigations

The recent news on the Jan. 22 Burail jailbreak and the police investigations raises even more questions:

  • The main police officer, Charan Singh, whose testimony implicated senior police officers in the jailbreak, mysteriously died of a heart attack in police detention.  Now, his testimony cannot be used in court.

  • The police have closed the jail and all of its inmates to visitors, following the death of Charan Singh.

  • The police have recovered a pistol, allegedly based on a statement made by the accused mastermind Narain Singh, and have charged him under the Arms Act.

  • The police have effectively given up on finding the escapees, withdrawing nine policemen from the case.

Our post from Feb. 5 discusses fears of torture of Narain Singh.
