The Bombay High Court named the judge who will conduct the retrial of the Best Bakery case, to be held in Maharashtra according to the Supreme Court’s April 12 order:

The High Court issued a notification on [Additional Sessions Judge A.M.] Thipsay’s appointment on Friday. It also fixed a time frame to complete the hearing by December 2004…

Twenty-one persons are accused in the case of burning 12 Muslims to death by setting fire to a bakery where they had taken shelter during the violence in Gujarat in March 2002.

All 21 were acquitted by a Gujarat court in June last year after several eyewitnesses retracted their statements. One of the main witnesses, Zahira Sheikh, later told The Indian Express she had lied in court out of fear as she had received threats to her life.

Two of the accused have been arrested, whereas the others have allegedly fled.

In the Bilkis Bano case, on the gang rape-murder of members of Bilkis’ family, the judge adjourned the bail hearing for 16 accused.  The counsel for the two doctors charged with falsifying post mortem reports argued before the judge at the hearing, prior to its adjournment.
