Best Bakery Prosecutors Finalized

June 22, 2004 | Comments Off on Best Bakery Prosecutors Finalized

The appointment of the public prosecutors in the Best Bakery case, being retried in Maharashtra, has been settled with the appointment of two prosecutors from Maharashtra and two from Gujarat, with NGO consultation:

The state government issued a notification on June 18 appointing P.R. Vakil, Manjula Rao, Zahiruddin Sheikh and S.M. Vora as the prosecutors in the case. Of them, Sheikh and Vora are from Gujarat

The case will be heard today before the judge.  The Best Bakery case originates from the murder of 14 Muslims during the 2002 Gujarat pogroms against Muslims.  The Gujarat section of the blog gives news relating to the development of the case.

In other related news, the controversy over the police killing of Ishrat Jahan Raza continues with Gujarat police claiming they have found links between Ishrat and militants.  That evidence comprises alleged diary entries regarding transfer of funds.
