   Hi

   I’m trying to find baidaphon arabic record catalogs from the first half of the 20th century, particularly the acoustic era. Naturally I’d love to find originals, but for my research – copies are perfectly fine. (physical or digital).
   do you know of a source for these?

   The consensus is that no copies of acoustic era Baidaphon catalogs are known to have survived.

   Dear Masad,

   Early Arabic catalogs are scarce, but below is a scan of the Arabic section in a German Gramophone Company catalog (April 1905):

   We also have an early Odeon Arabic catalog (c. 1923) in our collection, but it is not for sale and must be consulted here in the library.

   Others would likely be in institutional collections or in the hands of private collectors.

   Are the Lebanese CDs of reissues of early Arab singers on 78s of interest to your institution. The late Mr Hachlef published a large format illustrated catalog of archival Middle Eastern recordings which might help with some of these enquiries. I did a CD for him in c.1992 of early recordings (from 78s) of a Bahraini singer. It was a big list he offered and in pretty decent sound generally. What about the collection of very early cylinders found in a wall in Jeddah? Did they ever get republished? Cheers
