Dear Mr. Graf, dear friends,
Continuation of the letter from last week:
Francesca went on reading Rene May’s sworn statement: “’In response to Frau Kantelberg’s question as to how Joseph had behaved and what he had done, when Maik Hauke and Ronny Kunte dragged him to Thalheim’s, and Sandro Richter, Maik Hauke and Ute Schneider worked him over: Joseph cried loudly and struggled.
“’In reply to Frau Kantelberg’s question about why none of the adults there helped Joseph, and whether many adults had seen what was happening to Joseph: I wasn’t looking at the adults. I was looking at Joseph.
“’In answer to Frau Kantelberg’s question about why I didn’t call for help or else help Joseph myself: I thought at first they were just fooling around, until Maik Hauke used the stun gun on Joseph. Then I was afraid, because the adults and the swimming pool personnel didn’t do anything. In fact, the swimming pool personnel went away and hid. I was afraid that if I helped Joseph, they would kill me too.
“’Since around the beginning of the year, when we’ve been sick, my brother Sven and I have been going to Dr. Juergen Mueller. He’s in Muehlgaesschen in Sebnitz. We used to go to the child doctor, Frau Thunig. She often said to us: “Don’t go to the foreigners’ pharmacy, go to the pharmacy in the square.” Frau Thunig said, „They don’t have the medicine anyway. Go to the pharmacy in the square.” But I went to you (i.e., to the Kantelberg-Abdullas’ pharmacy) anyway, because it was too far for me to go to the square. Besides, you (i.e., the Kantelberg-Abdullas) always had the medicine, when I gave you the paper.
“’In response to Frau Kantelberg’s question as to whether what Frau Thunig had said about the foreigners’ pharmacy was really true: Yes, it’s completely true.
“’In reply to Frau Kantelberg’s question about whether friends reported that Frau Thunig had said things against the foreigners’ pharmacy: Yes, that’s true. Frau Thunig said not to go to the foreigners’ pharmacy, because they don’t have the medicine anyway.
“’In answer to Frau Kantelberg’s question about whether any adult person had said things against the Center Pharmacy (i.e., the pharmacy once owned by the Kantelberg-Abdullas): Yes, the heavy-set lady in Preissler’s (the owner’s name is Hein), the lady with the thick neck, said, “Foreigners should get out, the foreigners’ pharmacy should get out.”’”
Francesca paused a moment and then said, “It then states here, ‘I have read the above statement and swear it is true. Signed on Thursday, 6 July 2000. Rene May.’ And then there is the almost childish signature, as follows: ‘Sebnitz, 6.7.2000 Rene May.’”
She lay the papers on the table in front of her chair. “Well,” she said, “it’s strange, isn’t it? And next week it will be even stranger, because I’ll read out another sworn statement, also by Rene May, a statement that the Kantelberg-Abdullas gave me along with the other statements I’ve read. In this third statement, which is a record of the interrogation by the police in Dresden and not by lawyers in front of a judge or by the parents themselves, as was the case with the first two statements, the boy contradicts almost everything he said before.” For a moment she sat there, turning the thin gold ring she was wearing on one finger. “The Kantelberg-Abdullas gave me this third statement themselves, although it hurts their case, because they believe that the first two statements – one before a judge in Dresden and one before the Kantelberg-Abdullas themselves – are true, and that this third statement shows that the boy was put under pressure to tell a harmless version of his story. The Kantelberg-Abdullas could have tried to hide this third statement from me, but they didn’t do that. And so I trust them.”
She looked at the ring for a moment. “Yes,” she added, “you’ll see that the entire case is – how can I describe it? – almost Rashomon-like. Kurosawa could have made a masterpiece of it.”
Then she was silent.
Well, what do I know of Kurosawa? I’m a somewhat uneducated old man. And as always, I have to say that an old man like me just doesn’t know what to make of all this. It seems that a child was murdered, and the murderers are free. And not only that, but they were never brought to trial. How can something like that happen in Germany? I just don’t understand it. I wish it were possible that some kind of trial could be held in America, a trial that might make everything clear. But that’s probably impossible, isn’t it?

Bitte vergessen Sie nicht, dass der Autor dieses Briefes Autodidakt ist, was die deutsche Sprache betrifft, und er weiß, dass, wenn es um eine Übersetzung aus der deutschen Sprache ins Englische geht, viele Fehler hervortreten müssen. Er hofft aber, man werde diese Fehler übersehen, um hinter den Fehlern das sehen zu können, was in diesem Schreiben und in dieser Affäre von zentraler Bedeutung ist.

Sehr geehrter Herr Graf, sehr geehrte Freunde,
Fortsetzung von der letzten Woche:
Francesca las Rene Mays eidesstattliche Erklärung vor: „,Auf die Frage von Frau Kantelberg, wie Joseph, als Maik Hauke und Ronny Kunte Joseph zu Thalheims schleppten und Sandro Richter und Maik Hauke Joseph zusammen dann mit Ute Schneider bei Thalheims bearbeiteten, sich verhalten hätte und was er gemacht hätte, antworte ich: „Joseph weinte laut und strampelte hart“.
Auf die Frage von Frau Kantelbert, warum niemand der erwachsenen Badegäste Joseph geholfen hätte und ob manche Erwachsene gesehen hätten, was mit Joseph geschah, antworte ich: „Ich habe nicht so genau auf die Badegäste geguckt, sondern auf Joseph“.
Auf die Frage von Frau Kantelberg, warum ich nicht um Hilfe gerufen hätte oder Joseph geholfen hätte, antworte ich: „Ich dachte erst mal, sie machen Spaß, bis Maik Hauke Joseph mit dem Elektroschocker quälte. Dann hatte ich Angst, weil die Erwachsenen und das Aufsichtspersonal nichts unternahmen, sondern sich das Aufsichtspersonal sogar versteckte. Ich hatte Angst, dass wenn ich Joseph helfen würde, sie mich auch umbringen würden.
Ich und mein Bruder Sven gehen jetzt, wenn wir krank sind, zum Herrn Dr. Jürgen Müller, Mühlgässchen in Sebnitz, ungefähr seit Anfang dieses Jahres. Ich bin früher mit meinem Bruder Sven zur Kinderärztin Frau Thunig gegangen. Frau Thunig hat mir und meinem Bruder oft gesagt: ‚Geht nicht in die Ausländerapotheke, sondern geht zur Apotheke vorne auf dem Markt’. Frau Thunig hat gesagt: ,Die haben das Medikament sowieso nicht, geht lieber zur Apotheke vorne auf dem Markt’. Ich bin aber trotzdem zu ihnen gekommen, weil mir der Weg zum Markt zu weit war. Außerdem hatten Sie immer das Medikament, wenn ich Ihnen den Zettel gegeben habe“.
Auf die Frage von Frau Kantelberg, stimmt das wirklich das Frau Thunig von der Ausländerapotheke gesprochen hat, antworte ich: „Ja, das stimmt, ganz bestimmt“.
Auf die Frage von Frau Kantelberg, hast du von deinen Freunden gehört, dass Frau Thunig gegen die Ausländerapotheke gehetzt hat, antworte ich: „Ja, das stimmt. Frau Thunig hat gesagt, ‚Geht nicht zur Ausländerapotheke, die haben das Medikament sowieso nicht’“.
Auf die Frage von Frau Kantelberg, ob ich mitbekommen hätte, das irgendein Erwachsener gegen die Center Apotheke (die Apotheke der Kantelberg-Abdullas) gehetzt hätte, antworte ich: „Ja, ich habe z.B. bei Preißlers (Inhaber Hein) von der dicken Frau mit dem dicken Hals gehört: Ausländer raus, die Apotheke vom Ausländer soll raus“’“.
Francesca hielt einen Augenblick inne, dann sagte sie, „Es steht hier, ‚Ich habe obige Aussage gelesen und bestätige sie eidesstattlich. Unterschreiben am Donnerstag, den 06.07.2000. Rene May’. Und dann dann die fast kindische Unterschrift, wie folgt: ‚Sebnitz, den 6.7.2000 Rene May’“.
Sie legte die Papiere auf den Tisch, der vor ihrem Sessel stand. „Na ja“, sagte sie, „es ist ein Rätsel, oder? Und nächste Woche wird es noch rätselhafter werden, weil ich anfangen werde, noch eine Zeugenvernehmung von Rene May vorzulesen, eine Zeugenvernehmung, die die Kantelberg-Abdullas mir gegeben haben, zusammen mit allem, was ich bis jetzt vorgelesen habe. In dieser dritten Vernehmung von Rene May, geführt von der Polizei in Dresden und nicht von Rechtsanwälten vor einer Richterin oder von Josephs Eltern, wie die ersten zwei Vernehmungen, widerspricht der Junge fast alles, was er vorher gesagt hat“. Nachdenklich drehte sie den dünnen goldenen Ring, den sie trug. „Die Kantelberg-Abdullas haben mir diese dritte Vernehmung gegeben, obwohl sie ihrer Sache schadet, weil sie glauben, dass die erste zwei Vernehmungen – vor einer Dresdner Richterin und vor den Kantelberg-Abdullas selbst – wahr sind, und dass diese dritte Vernehmung zeigt, dass der Junge unter Druck gestellt wurde, damit er eine neue und harmlose Version seiner Geschichte erzählen würde. Die Kantelberg-Abdullas hätten versuchen können, mir diese dritte Vernehmung zu verheimlichen, aber sie haben das nicht getan. Also vertraue ich ihnen“.
Sie schaute den Ring einen Augenblick an. „Ja“, fügte sie hinzu, „ihr werdet sehen, dass der ganze Fall – was kann man sagen? – fast ‚Rashomon’-artig ist. Kurosawa hätte ein Meisterwerk daraus machen können“.
Dann schwieg sie.
Na ja, was weiß ich von Kurosawa? Ich bin ein ziemlich ungebildeter alter Mann. Und wie üblich muss ich sagen, dass ein alter Mann, wie ich es bin, einfach nicht viel mit dieser Sache anfangen kann. Es scheint, Leute einen Mord an einem Kind begangen haben, aber die Mörder sind frei. Darüber hinaus wurde es ihnen gar kein Prozess gemacht. Wie kann so etwas in Deutschland heutzutage passieren? Das verstehe ich einfach nicht. Ich wünsche mir aber, es wäre möglich, dass ein Prozess in Amerika stattfinden könnte, das all dies erklären würde. Das ist vielleicht unmöglich, oder?
