Dear Mr. Graf, dear friends,
Last week Francesca read to us a portion of the transcript of another judicial interrogation in the matter of the investigation into the death of the child Joseph Abdulla. The witness was a young boy from Sebnitz, Daniel Steiner. The transcript has the Dresden district court file number 270 Gs 3141/00 414 Js 53329/00; the interrogation was carried out on 21 November 2000, at ten o’clock in the morning.
Francesca continued with the reading from the point where she had ended last week:
In response to a question about why he didn’t want to remember now: “Those guys are strange somehow. Maik Hauke has more connections somehow and that’s why I’m more afraid of him.”
In response to a question about whether the witness had gone away again, when Joseph was thrown into the pool: “I went back to my place again. Then Antonio came and said that someone was lying there and I thought that it has to be Joseph now. From the time I went from the pool to the place where I’d been lying until Antonio came, about three minutes went by.”
In response to a question from the district attorney as to how many people were at the pool at that time: “You couldn’t say it was completely full.”
In response to a question about whether other people were in the deep pool: “At the pool there were still people who had swum their laps and were standing at the edge of the pool. Those people were laughing. Those who were swimming in the pool didn’t do anything. Those were adults.”
In response to a question by the district attorney as to whether there was a swimming pool attendant in the area: “The swimming pool attendant was in the pool cabin. I saw her look out from the cabin in that direction and then turn around and act as if nothing was happening. She saw that Joseph was being ‘worked over’ at the fence by Sandro Richter and Maik Hauke.”
In response to a question about whether things like that had happened to Joseph before: “Not at all.”
In response to a question from the district attorney about whether he could answer the question, ‘Why Joseph?’: “Sure, because he was a foreigner. It isn’t obvious that Joseph was a foreigner. They had his father in mind.”
In response to a question about where the three went, when Joseph was recovered (from the water): “They beat it, went away. Normally, so that it wouldn’t look unusual.”
In response to a question about whether they had sneaked away: “Yes, you could say that.”
Francesca said to us, “I think it would be a good idea to stop at this point, because the next few questions and answers seem to me to be somewhat irrelevant. I’ll read them to you next week, though.”
I was again practically in a state of shock, and I said I couldn’t believe that honest and upright people like Sandro Richter, Maik Hauke and the others could do such a thing.
Francesca stared at me for a moment. “You’re not brain-dead by any chance,” she said, “or are you?”

Bitte vergessen Sie nicht, dass der Autor dieses Briefes Autodidakt ist, was die deutsche Sprache betrifft, und er weiß, dass, wenn es um eine Übersetzung aus der deutschen Sprache ins Englische geht, viele Fehler hervortreten müssen. Er hofft aber, man werde diese Fehler übersehen, um hinter den Fehlern das sehen zu können, was in diesem Schreiben und in dieser Affäre von zentraler Bedeutung ist.

Sehr geehrter Herr Graf, sehr geehrte Freunde,
Francesca hat letzte Woche einen Teil eines Protokolls uns vorzulesen. Es war das Protokoll noch einer richterlichen Zeugenvernehmung in der Todesermittlugnssache des Kindes Joseph Abdulla, Geschäftszeichen des Amtsgerichts Dresden: 270 Gs 3141/00 414 Js 53329/00, am 21.11.2000 um 10.00 Uhr durchgeführt.
Sie fuhr mit dem Vorlesen fort, wo sie letzte Woche aufgehört hat:
Auf Frage, warum er sich jetzt nicht erinnern wollte: Das sind irgendwie komische Kunden. Maik Hauke hat irgendwie mehr Beziehungen und deswegen habe ich vor dem mehr Angst.
Auf Frage StA, ob sich der Zeuge wieder entfernt hat, als der Joseph ins Beck geworfen wurde: Ich bin dann wieder zu meinem Platz gelaufen. Dann kam der Antonio an und sagte, da liegt jemand und ich dachte, das ist bestimmt jetzt der Joseph. Als ich vom Becken an meinen Liegeplatz gelaufen bin und bis der Antonio kam hat es ca. zwei bis drei Minuten gedauert.
Auf Frage StA, wieviele Leute zu dieser Zeit in dem Bad waren: Ganz voll kann man nicht sagen.
Auf Frage, ob noch andere Leute in dem tiefen Becken waren: Im Becken waren noch Leute, die ihre Bahnen geschwommen haben and am Beckenrand standen, welche, die gelacht haben. Die im Becken schwammen haben gar nichts gemacht. Das waren Erwachsene Leute.
Auf Frage StA, ob sich in dem Bereich ein Bademeister aufhielt: Die Bademeisterin war in dem Badehäuschen. Ich habe gesehen, dass die Bademeisterin aus dem Häuschen dorthin gesehen hat und hat sich dann wieder rumgedreht und so getan, als wäre nichts. Sie hat gesehen, dass der Joseph von Sandro Richter und Maik Hauke am Zaun „bearbeitet“ wurde.
Auf Frage des StA, ob es schon vorher solche Sachen gegen den Joseph gegeben hat: Überhaupt nicht.
Auf Frage des StA, ob er weiß, warum gerade der Joseph: Bestimmt, weil es ein Ausländer war. Es ist nicht offensichtlich, dass der Joseph ein Ausländer war. Die haben ja auch den Vater gesehen.
Auf die Frage, wo die drei hin sind, als der Joseph gebor(g)en war: Die sind abgehauen, gegangen. Normal, so dass es nicht auffällt.
Auf Frage, ob sie rausgeschlichen sind: Ja, das kann man so sagen.
Francesca sagte uns, „Ich glaube, es wäre eine gute Idee hier aufzuhören, weil die nächsten paar Fragen und Antworten mir etwas irrelevant zu sein scheinen. Die werde ich aber nächste Woche vorlesen.“
Ich blieb fast schockiert und sagte, dass ich nicht glauben konnte, dass anständige Menschen wie Sandro Richter, Maik Hauke und die anderen so etwas tun konnten.
Francesca starrte mich einen Augenblick an. „Du bist nicht vielleicht hirnlos,“ sagte sie mir, „oder?“
