Exactly!

Republicans should be jumping on the bandwagon to legalize gay marriage, as David Brooks points out in his Saturday column.  I don’t agree with Brooks much of the time, but he’s a hell of a smart guy, and very worth listening to.

I hear he based this column on a piece he read on Andrew Sullivan’s blog.

When I read about Brooks article I wondered if he’d read Sullivan’s essay.

It baffles me that anyone might expect the socially conservative Republicans to see things this way. When I read Sullivan’s article I couldn’t help but wonder how he of all people could be that naive.

They aren’t interested in supporting gay people to become more stable. They want gay people to become straight people.

And the practical Republican pols have a different take. Only 25% of the evangelical Christians came out and voted in 2000. By scaring the born-again with gay marriage they are hoping they can up that percentage in 2004.

Just think fewer than half of the most conservative religious people voted in a narrow election that was decided by the Supreme Court.

Well, yes. But Brooks is calling them on their hypocrisy. We all know it won’t make political hay to actually support gay people (and for anyone who thinks it’s harder to be black or another ethnic minority in the USA than to be gay, just ask if it’s OK to be publicly racist in the same way as it is to be publicly homophobic).

If socially conservative Republicans actually believed anything they said, rather than being hateful and hypocritical, they’d believe as Brooks outlines. As it is, Brooks illuminates their insidious and craven lust for power for its own sake.
