Although we are often presented with a view of the transition of traditional media to the internet from the vantage point of the media enterprises themselves, we are offered a far more limited account from some of the vital members of the creative process that give entertainment its the collaborative form. As one of very few voice actors that the major American television networks entrust to represent their brands and that film studios, radio stations, and advertisers use to compel consumers to watch, listen, and buy, Joe Cipriano is in a unique position to address future trends in the media space. First, as a largely freelance performer in the notoriously fickle entertainment business, Cipriano has built and maintained a long list of clients that has kept him employed at the upper echelon of his profession for the better part of thirty years. As if that weren’t enough, he is an active member of the Screen Actors Guild, one of the largest unions in the U.S., where he ran for office during the last election cycle. Finally, Joe recently began a working relationship with Apple to provide his voice talents to podcasters using Garage Band software, brilliantly giving amateurs the tools to associate his voice with the professionalism it is noted for in the broader industry. In order to get a more developed representation of how some entertainment insiders feel about the past, present, and future changes in the media landscape, I interviewed Joe Cipriano twice over the last two weeks and what appears on my audio podcast are some of the highlights from those conversations.
