AANS Peripheral Nerve Course
I attended the April 2003, Hands-On Peripheral Nerve Injuries course in San Diego at the AANS meeting. The couse had a distinguished faculty including Eric Zager, John McGillicuddy, Allan Friedman, Allen Maniker, Robert Tiel, Robert J. Spinner, David Kline, and Hans-Peter Richter.
The couse was in a dissection format. Cadaveric pre-dissections were peformed exposing the brachial plexus, ulnar nerve at the elbow, median nerve at the wrist, and radial nerve. The group then split into smaller groups at a ratio of 1 faculty member per two students and additional dissections were performed under direct supervision of these experts.
This high faculty to student ratio allowed several hours of intense review of upper extremity peripheral nerve anatomy, surigical exposure of common compression syndromes, review of differential diagnosis of lesions of the upper extremity peripheral nerves. In addition, advanced techniques of nerve transposition including for nerve repair were extensively reviewed.
I would highly recommend the course for any practitioner with an active peripheral nerve practice, those reviewing for board examinations, and those who wish to review advanced techniques of nerve transposition.
