By coincidence, I think, I am presently following Dr. Taylor Marshall’s plan for reading the Bible in a year. I’ll be finished by the end of next month. What has startled me in all this reading is the single most repeated event in the Old Testament, as told especially in the books of prophets like Jeremiah and Ezekiel.

That event is the way the People of God, again and again and again, stopped observing the commandments when they were living through periods of great material prosperity, falling into idolatry and sin, especially sins of the flesh. Apparently they thought that nothing would ever change for them, and that they could simply go on and on and on. Then suddenly and without further warning they were faced with the collapse and eventual destruction of their society and all they ever knew.

No matter how many times they lived through such an experience, they seemed never to learn.

It makes you think: if something like that doesn’t happen to us in this troubled era of ours, it will be the first and only time in the long millennia of human history when it has NOT occurred.

In the United States, the disappearance of the Episcopal (i.e., Anglican) church has accelerated as the number of priestesses and open homosexuals – including priests and bishops – has increased.

This is also true of the Anglican church in the UK. It seems that it will soon also be true of the Catholic Church in the UK.

A cynic might say that another term for “LGBT community” is “the Gates of Hell.” Even if those Gates prevail against the Catholic Church in the UK, we have been promised that they won’t prevail everywhere.

Most German bishops apparently believe that the Church in Germany can stop the hemorrhage of Catholics out of the Church here by simply continuing to follow those ideas that have – for the last fifty years – been causing that hemorrhage in the first place.

The good bishops are, I fear, in for a sad surprise in the coming decades. The demonic “spirit” of Vatican II has a lock on their minds and their thinking.

That “spirit” will go on leading them over the cliff of what Cardinal Walter Brandmüller calls their “self-destructive” behavior, until the Church in Germany virtually disappears, except for the faithful Catholics who remain, quietly raising families and attending the Traditional Latin Mass every Sunday.

Thank you. The book by Linda von Keyserlingk-Rebein looks very good.

The topic reminds me of a question I wanted to ask the Congress people at the Rathaus last week. I didn’t think of it in time, but I wanted to ask this: largely by lying to the German people, a leader came to power in this country in 1933, and for five or six years everything went well. Then the catastrophe began. Now, there is another leader who came to power three years ago in another important country, largely by lying, and things have been going well in that country since then, despite the fact that this leader continues to lie, blatantly, on a daily basis, day after day. My question is: do you think that the country can continue to prosper, or will there eventually be a catastrophe, probably not like 1939-1945, but a catastrophe nevertheless?

I’m reminded of a statement the billionaire Michael Bloomberg made during the US presidential campaign in 2016: “I’m from New York, and I know a con man when I see one.”

“When I first got there, I was stunned and thrilled by how beautiful and detailed everything was. The altar was stunning and intricate and I adored the stained glass windows. There was so much to feast my eyes on and I felt like a little child looking around again.

vielen Dank für diesen Artikel über Kardinal Burke. Ich will auch sagen, dass ich hoffe, ich war nicht unhöflich heute nach der Heiligen Messe. Tatsache ist, dass es mir auch nach dreißig Jahren in Deutschland manchmal schwer fällt zu verstehen, was die Leute mir sagen wollen, es sei denn, sie sprechen sehr l-a-n-g-s-a-m und k-l-a-r (was Du fast immer tust). Ich konnte Dich heute nicht richtig verstehen. (Wenn ich etwas schreibe, kann ich natürlich immer Google Translate verwenden.) Ich habe jedoch heute verstanden, dass wir uns vielleicht nächste Woche nach der Messe treffen können.

Ich versuche gern, nach der Messe fünfzehn Minuten an Danksagung zu verbringen, weil man sagt, dass die Eucharistie so lange in uns bleibt. Es scheint nicht gut, nach der Messe aus der Kirche zu eilen, solange wir noch den Leib Christi in uns haben.

Thank you for your message and its contents, all of which are new to me. Here is a link to the website of the Martin School at Oxford: http://bit.ly/2K3wrMg There is a wealth of information there about the school and its founder.

These days, I try very hard not to fall into the trap that a lot of people seem to fall into. They take one or two aspects of a person that they find disagreeable, and because of those aspects they condemn everything that person is or has ever done. For example, one of Dr. Martin’s comments seem to indicate a certain hubris on his part, so he must be a bad person, and his life, work, and his research institute are all worthless. Or to take another example, Thomas Jefferson was a Freemason, owned slaves, and opposed organized religion, therefore the courage he showed in supporting the American colonies in their independence from Britain, and his organizational brilliance that contributed to the establishment of the young American republic, and his achievements as President of the United States are all utterly without value. Even one of his most famous quotations is probably a lie: “I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever.”

As I said, I try not to fall into that intellectual trap.

I try to be as discriminating as possible in my judgements and evaluations regarding other people. I know such thinking horrifies all those who believe in “political correctness,” but it seems to me to be the wisest way ot thinking.

Justin Amash is a congressman from the state of Michigan, where I grew up. On July 4, he wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post (attached to this e-mail in PDF format) in which he gives his reasons for leaving the Republican Party.

Trump, in his usual fashion, responded by calling Amash “one of the dumbest and most disloyal men in Congress….A total loser!”

When Trump, as President of the United States, uses words like that, I realize more and more that the only reason I voted for him was because I was conned into it (“dazu verleitet”). He is, in my opinion, the greatest con man (“Hochstapler”) ever to occupy the office of president.

Sehr geehrter Pater Elias,

es war wundervoll zu hören, wie das Gloria und Credo heute bei der Messe um 8:30 Uhr im Gregorianischen Gesang gesungen wurden.

Ich wurde an die heiligen Messen erinnert, die ich als Junge besucht habe, als ein Dominikaner einmal in der Woche in der Stadt in den USA, in der ich aufgewachsen bin, Messe feierte. Das war vor dem Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzil, also feierte dieser Dominikaner die Messe im alten, traditionellen und majestätischen dominikanischen Ritus.

Ich weiß, dass so etwas heute unmöglich ist. Tradition und Majestät werden bei der Messe nicht mehr sehr gewünscht. Leider. Martin Mosebach hat einmal gesagt, dass die heilige Messe durch dem „Geist“ des Konzils „entsakrilisiert“ wurde und dass die Leute aus der Kirche fliehen. Ich fürchte, er hatte recht, und ich denke, dass das die wahre Tragödie der Kirche in unserer Zeit ist, aber was weiß ich? Ich bin nur ein alter Mann, der immer noch sehr weit von seiner Heimat entfernt wohnt, seine wahre Heimat.

The reason that Japanese and Chinese can communicate somewhat in writing, but not in speaking, has to do not only with the fact that the grammar of the two languages is quite different. It also has to do with the fact that the same character is pronounced one way in Japanese and in a completely different way in Chinese. To take one simple example, the character “人” means “man.” It is pronounce “hito” in Japanese and “ren” in Chinese. So by WRITING some of the characters, a Japanese and a Chinese can communicate at a very basic level, but they could never communicate by simply using words in their own languages.

The Chinese written characters are the problem in conveying Christianity to the Japanese? I find that argument unconvincing. The Japanese use the same written characters as the Chinese, which usually have a close or similar meaning. And the Chinese have never had a problem understanding Christianity. (The two spoken languages, Chinese and Japanese, are not mutually intelligible, however, since they are based on two utterly different and unrelated systems of grammar. Chinese and Japanese people can, though, in a very limited way, communicate in writing since Chinese characters have the same or a similar meaning in Chinese and Japanese.)

Hi Flo,

As always, I feel regret that I haven’t sent you a Christmas card, especially since the “Christmas Wishes” that you sent me were really so splendid. I especially like the one about “angels who will accompany you wherever you are.” Sometimes, when I think of what each of us has to survive in life, when I think of what we DO survive, the best explanation often seems to be something like angels guiding us – and God too, of course.

But perhaps there’s an upside to not sending you a card. If I did that, I would probably have little motive to say that I continue to believe this: when I think of both of you raising a family, at a time like this, in a world and a society like the one we’re living in now, it seems courageous, even heroic.

I know, of course neither of you think of yourselves as “courageous” or “heroic,” but it really does seem that way to me. When I try to imagine what it would be like to try to raise children to be good adults in a world like this, it seems that both of you are doing something truly extraordinary.

In a world where Trump is president, where Francis is pope, where Boris Johnson is British prime minister, where American school children have drag queens reading stories to them in school libraries, where children have to practice what to do if a killer comes into their school – raising a family in THAT world really DOES seem heroic.

I know, those things happen mostly in America, but I think I could come up with a list of sad events that happen in Europe too, – a kid shooting 16 people in a school in Erfurt in 2002, the sex education for little children that “enlightened” teachers here promote, Putin having a guy shot in a park in Berlin and people poisoned in the UK, terrorists murdering people in London, in France, even here in Germany.

Of course all that is gloomy, too gloomy, but there is another side of life – the faith I was raised in as a child can give meaning to life at an age when it’s not easy for many people to find meaning. In spite of everything that’s going on in the world, that kind of faith should give everyone a sense of joy and hope, a feeling – no, MORE than a feeling, a knowledge – that the angels mentioned on your card are real.

You’re right, “the pope is not free in his authority to propose some novel teaching which contradicts the Apostolic Tradition.” But what this unbalanced pontiff – and his Jesuit and German masters – seem intent on doing is to propose novel teachings slowly, gradually, inch by inch, hoping no one notices. Then, in a generation or two, EVERYTHING will have changed. Of course, this is actually what has been happening since the close of that “pastoral” Second Vatican Council. The Gates of Hell have learned not to operate with a violent, frontal assault, but more subtly and deceitfully – as is fitting for the Father of Lies. danke für Deine Nachricht!

Ich habe ein paar Fragen. Wenn möglich, möchte ich noch einmal an den Einkehrabenden des Opus Dei teilnehmen. Ein Grund dazu ist, dass ich einen traditionellen, konservativen amerikanischen Beichtvater habe (weil ich ihm auf Englisch zur Beichte gehen kann), und er hat mir einmal gesagt, es wäre eine gute Idee nochmals an diesen Einkehrabenden teilzunehmen, wenn möglich.

Ein zweiter Grund dazu ist, dass ich, als traditioneller Katholik, hoffe, dass sich die Haltung des Opus Dei gegenüber den eher merkwürdigen Lehren von Papst Franziskus geändert hat. (Wie Du weißt, war die Unterstützung von einem Opus Dei-Priester für diese Ideen der Grund, weshalb ich nicht mehr an den Einkehrabenden teilnehmen konnte.)

Ich hoffe, das Opus Dei (oder zumindest dieser Priester) unterstützt die seltsamen Lehren dieses Papstes nicht wie zuvor. Also meine Fragen: Kannst Du mir sagen, ob das wahr ist? Und wenn es wahr ist, kannst Du mir sagen, wo diese Abende gerade stattfinden? Essen? Köln? Und denkst Du, es wäre möglich, mit jemandem aus Düsseldorf dorthin zu reisen?

vielen, vielen Dank für das Schreiben einer so langen und durchdachte Nachricht. Ich werde sehr sorgfältig über alles nachdenken. Nach dem, was Du geschrieben hast, fürchte ich jedoch, dass ich immer noch zu traditionell, zu konservativ, zu eng mit der Lehre des Evangeliums und der Kirche verbunden bin – zu “starr”, wie der Papst uns nennt -, um viel zum Opus Dei beitragen zu können.

Nachdem ich Deinen Brief gelesen hatte, fiel mir auch ein, dass mein Beichtvater nicht versteht, wie sehr sich das Opus Dei verändert hat. Mein Beichtvater, der so konservativ und traditionell ist wie ich, scheint zu glauben, dass das Opus Dei immer noch dasselbe ist, wie es war. Ich glaube, das ist der Grund dazu, dass er sagte, es wäre eine gute Idee, nochmals an den Einkehrabenden teilzunehmen.

Aber ich bete weiter, jeden Tag, für die Mitglieder des Opus Dei, und natürlich für die ganze Kirche, die unter der katastrophalen Herrschaft dieses tragischen Papstes so sehr leidet. Am Ende zählt jedoch natürlich nur das: “Es geschehe, es erfülle sich, gelobt und in Ewigkeit verherrlicht sei der über alles gerechte und über alles liebenswerte Wille des Herrn. – Amen. – Amen”

Dear Klaus,

Thank you for giving me the magazine with the German translation of Pius XII’s encyclical “Musicae Sacrae Disciplina.”

In order to be sure that I understood the paragraph that you marked, paragraph 47, I accessed the English translation on the Vatican website (http://bit.ly/2QaJqyT).

The English translation of that paragraph is as follows: “47. Where, according to old or immemorial custom, some popular hymns are sung in the language of the people after the sacred words of the liturgy have been sung in Latin during the solemn Eucharistic sacrifice, local Ordinaries can allow this to be done ‘if, in the light of the circumstances of the locality and the people, they believe that (custom) cannot prudently be removed.’ The law by which it is forbidden to sing the liturgical words themselves in the language of the people remains in force, according to what has been said.”

So, as I read this paragraph, vernacular hymns may be sung “after the sacred words of the liturgy have been sung in Latin during the solemn Eucharistic sacrifice.” But what does “sacred words of the liturgy…sung in Latin” mean? If “the liturgy” means the Mass itself, then that would mean that vernacular hymns may be sung only after the Mass is completed.

If “sacred words of the liturgy” means only “the Words of Consecration,” which to me seems unlikely, then vernacular hymns may not be sung until after that part of Mass.

Either way, what happens at the Masses in Volmerswerth does not conform to the rules set down in that encyclical, because vernacular hymns are sung mainly during the first part of the Mass, BEFORE the Words of Consecration. In addition, as I remember it, in Volmerswerth, after the consecration, there is very little singing, in any language.

Anyway, as I said to you once, I’m very grateful for the first four or five years that I attended Mass in Volmerswerth. I will always have the memory of the beautiful Masses of those years, when only Gregorian chant was sung during the Mass. That memory carries me through all the awful Novus Ordo Masses I have to sit through, at Andreaskirche and elsewhere.

It just occurred to me that “after the sacred words of the liturgy have been sung in Latin during the solemn Eucharistic sacrifice” could NOT refer merely to the Words of Consecration, because the Words of Consecration are never sung.

So can “the sacred words of the liturgy” mean anything except the Mass itself in this context? Then that would mean that the encyclical is specifying that vernacular hymns may be sung only when the Mass is complete and not during the Mass itself. How else can the encyclical be read?

Now I understand why I always heard, in the United States, that vernacular hymns may never be sung during Mass, only before or after the Mass is complete. The US bishops were simply following Pius XII’s encyclical.

OR “after the sacred words of the liturgy have been sung in Latin during the solemn Eucharistic sacrifice” COULD mean, for example, the Kyrie or the Gloria. In that case, after the Kyrie and Gloria have been sung in Latin, THEN a vernacular translation can be sung – or so it seems.

But what about a “low Mass,” or, as it’s called here, I think, “eine stille Messe”? In a Mass like that, where NOTHING is sung, it would mean that no vernacular hymns at all, under any circumstances, may be sung during the Mass.

In any case, again, it seems to me, the way vernacular hymns are sung during Mass in Volmerswerth is simply not correct, no matter how you interpret the encyclical.
