Message to Church Militant:

Dear Church Militant Editor,

I made a very favorable – and very sincerely meant – comment about the latest Vortex in the “comments” section of the video.

But I’d also like to make another comment that’s not meant for public consumption.

Sometimes a good argument can be harmed by hyperbole and exaggeration. This Vortex video on masculinity is an example. What Michael says in the video is absolutely good and absolutely true – about masculinity and men and fatherhood. However, when he mentions priests “raping” teenage boys, he really damages his own argument.

Perhaps “seducing” or “having sex with” teenage boys would be better, because a thoughtful viewer is going to ask himself, “How many teenage boys – with all their teenage strength and energy – can be overpowered and sexually penetrated by force through the efforts of a soft, overweight middle-aged man? Does that really make sense? And some viewers may ask themselves, “If THAT doesn’t make sense, then maybe some of the other things Michael is saying don’t make sense either.”

Again, I just want to say that what Michael says in this and other Vortex episodes is so good and to the point, that it seems a shame for him to undermine the truth of what he’s reporting by adding unnecessary and gratuitous words and comments.

It’s just a thought.

Letter to Ron Rieder:

Ron,

Well, I do say “Thanks!” And once more: I’m really grateful to you for going to all the trouble of dealing with this issue. To repeat, I was extremely naive to think that banks in the US operate like banks in Europe. When we transfer funds here, either to another bank, another city, or another country, it’s a matter of a few keystrokes and – ping! – it’s done. No complicated forms to fill out, no discussions with bank officers, nothing. I stupidly thought that that’s the way things worked in the US, too.

So I was – and am – sorry you had to waste so much time. Then, this morning, when I saw the form that you e-mailed (a form on which it was impossible even to enter a 14-character international cell phone number), I thought you’d done enough and should just be rewarded for all of your time-consuming efforts. I thought I should just let you keep what is, after all, a fairly small amount of money, which the government should not have sent to citizens living overseas anyway. (I mean, there’s little we expatriates can do to “stimulate” the US economy, unless we download Kindle books from Amazon.com or something.)

Well, in one way it’s not over yet, because the money won’t appear – if it does appear – in my account for a few days. But in another way, it IS over, because whether or not the money arrives, I’m through with this whole thing – except for being grateful to you for your help. Anyway, I’ll never mention this again, and if I ever again receive a check in dollars, I’ll find some other way of depositing it to my account here.

Sometimes German words are long and unwieldy and a little intimidating (e.g., “Bundesverfassungsgerichtsurteil” = Decision by the Federal Constitutional Court).

But some German words are just kind of cute. The word for “panic-buying” in German is “Hamsterkauf.” “Kauf” is German for “purchase” or “buying.” So literally the word means “hamster buying” or “buying like a hamster.”
Why “hamster”? Who knows? Or, as they say in Yiddish, גיי ווייס, “go figure.”

A message to Klaus Beckmann, after he sent me an article about the desecration of a large number of graves in a cemetery in Krefeld:

Dear Klaus,

Terrible, terrible, terrible. The other day I had coffee with Andreas (he speaks slowly, clearly, and simply, and is patient with my clumsy German), and we both agreed  that we may very well be living through the “Endzeit,” or at least AN “Endzeit.” Horrific events like this one in Krefeld (and today in Nantes, and all over the US almost every day) would seem to support that conclusion.

And of course there are other “Endzeit” signs as well; the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the world economy, which is only beginning, together with the monstrous situation in the Church now. I discussed much of this with Father Gregory when I went to confession on Wednesday, and he quite reasonably repeated – with sincerity and conviction and depth – the simple truth that our faith is tested in such times and we can only trust in God to save us. Such an idea sounds simple and trite to most people these days, but I find it remarkably consoling. (I suppose I also find it consoling, because I’ll be eighty years old in six months, and I won’t have to face the brunt of the coming storm.)

Letter to Roland Fischer:

Lieber Roland,

zunächst muss ich sagen, dass ich im amerikanischen Internet über diese neue Richtlinie des Vatikans über Pfarreien gelesen habe. Ich habe auch gelesen, dass sich viele deutsche Bischöfe beschweren, weil diese Richtlinie den “Klerikalismus” zu stärken scheinen. Diese Bischöfe auch behaupten, dass die Laien eine wichtigere Rolle in der Kirche und in jeder Gemeinde spielen sollen. (Und wo kann man diese Idee im Evangelium finden?)

Die Gedanken von P. Wolfgang zu diesem Thema überraschen mich nicht, obwohl ich sagen muss, dass ich kein einziges Wort der Predigten in St. Andreas hören und verstehen kann. (Und das auch stört mich nicht, denn viele Dominikaner sind wie die Jesuiten: Sie haben anscheinend ihre eigene Religion. Aber solange ihre heiligen Messen und die Eucharistie gültig sind, werde ich weiterhin in St. Andreas zur Messe gehen.)

Über 200.000 Menschen verließen 2019 die katholische Kirche in Deutschland (https://www.tagesschau.de/inland/anstieg-kirchenaustritte-101.html) und dies wird so lange so weitergehen, wie die Bischöfe hier ihrem “synodalen Weg” folgen. (Gleichzeitig gibt es nur sehr wenige jüngere Menschen, die in der Kirche aktiv sind.)

Ich denke, es wird eine Zeit kommen – es könnte eine Generation dauern – wo wir traditionellen Katholiken die einzigen Katholiken in der Kirche sein werden. Also, was auch immer P. Wolfgang oder der Rest der Dominikaner und Jesuiten denken, ist für mich von geringer Bedeutung.

Deine Nachricht enthält einige Dinge, die ich nicht verstanden habe. Ist “Schafft die Kirche sich selbst ab?” ein Artikel, den P. Wolfgang schrieb? Ich konnte diesen Artikel nirgendwo finden. Ich bin auf die Website von “Geistliche Impuls” gegangen, aber ich konnte ihn nicht finden. Haben Sie einen Link zum Artikel (wenn es sich um einen Artikel handelt)?
