Quack, Quack!
It’s that time of year again. The Duck Tours have started up. For those of you not from the Boston area, our city is filled with history. In the past, scenic tours were provided on open-air trolleys. Then just over a decade ago a company took some old amphibious World War II vehicles designed to drive on land and float in water and converted them into touring vehicles. Basically, you get on this boat and drive around historic Boston and then drive into the Charles River to tour the river. All the while, the conDUCKtor (their words) infuses humor with history and encourage the passengers to quack at pedestrians (seriously…it got so bad that the city got involved and put limitations on where people are allowed to quack).
I believe these Duck Tours are now fairly common along watefront cities – but Boston was the first city to do it and, I gotta’ tell you, that first year it was quite shocking to see these boats driving around the city of Boston. Nowadays, I don’t even notice them. They could be a Honda Civic for all I would notice. Here’s a shot of one driving into the river (stolen from their website):

Oh, and a previous post indicated that I was in a Johnny Cash mood lately. Well, that has changed. That was my favorite album of 2003. But I’ve moved on in my life and have crowned a favorite album (so far) of 2004: It’s by the Scissor Sisters. If you like 1980’s Prince, 1970’s Elton John, and “Freedom ’90” era George Michael – you’ll love this group! You gotta’ get the album just to hear their disco/trance version of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb”…sung in Bee Gee-esque falsetto. I’m serious! It’s a riot!
But the whole album is truly flawless. I’ts a must buy. So go to your local record shop and tell them Karl sent you to buy the new Scissor Sisters album!
Finally, (damn – I do babble), I’ve posted pictures of my commute (see the “Karl’s Photo Gallery” linke to the right). Matt viewed them and said they were sad because there were no people in them. But since my commute is a reverse commute (I go from downtown Boston to neighboring Cambridge while most people do the opposite) there aren’t many people on my train. Anyway, check it out if you’re interested in a day in the life of Karl.

That’s interesting, I wonder wether I will ever see these kind of Duck Tours here in Rome, and splashing into the Tiber River!
Hmmm… Now, let me think, who was it that bitched and bitched and bitched when I purchased that “import” and groaned as I made you listen to it. Yes, I do believe that that would be me. The same person who turned you on to Johnny Cash — and also received harsh criticism from a certain crankmeister for purchasing a lame country CD. Yes, that crankmeister would be Karl. Face it — I am pop culture for you, baby!
