So Close, Yet So Far

When I was opening the mail Friday night I noticed an envelope from the State Treasurer. At first I was concerned that they were going to say I owed more money in taxes. But then window in the envelope appeared to show a check. Was I get an additional refund?

So, I eagerly ripped open the envelope to find a check for $250.00!!! Apparently, the seasons ticket to the Mass Cash lottery that my parents gave me back in May was recently a winner (seasons ticket holders have their winnings mailed to them since forgetful people like me can’t remember when the semi-weekly drawings take place).

Don’t get me wrong – I’m thrilled with my winnings, but it’s so discouraging when you realize that if I had matched just one additional number, my winnings would have jumped to $100,000.00.  So, 4 out 5 numbers gives you $250.00 and 5 out of 5 gives you 400 times that amount. I had 4 out of 5 numbers!!!! Sigh.

But I’m taking this as a good sign that I’m carrying on the family tradition of luck. About 10 years ago my parents won $200,000.00. In addition, although they don’t win every time they go to a casino, they have hit the jackpot on slot machines more times than anybody else I know. Perhaps my luck is finally changing? Maybe if I can get random people to start rubbing my belly, I’ll get lucky? Wait – that didn’t come out right.

Anyway, Matt returns from New York City this evening. Hopefully the trip was just what he needed. Based on his nightly phone calls, it sounds like he’s doing lots of damage (shopping) – which must mean he’s enjoying himself!

Congrats! Don’t think of matching that 5th number, at least you’ve got money you didn’t have before.

A trip to Mohegan or Foxwoods is always fun (actually, I came home with a bunch last weekend)!

“Maybe if I can get random people to start rubbing my belly, I’ll get lucky?” I think that came out just like you meant. And the answer to that is Yes. hehe.
