Regress and Progress
I found out this morning that my niece (who I wrote about yesterday) has been transferred by ambulance to the New England Medical Center’s Floating Hospital for Children in Boston (this is about two hours from their usual hosptial in western Massachusetts). In addition to her strandard complications, she’s developed a urinary tract infection. They don’t know how long she’ll be in Boston, but my sister-in-law is here with her. My brother hopes to come today or tomorrow if he can find somebody to pick up their other two children from school. Ugh.
On a lighter note, I was able to talk politics with my parents over the weekend and it went suprisingly well (compared to conversations I hear other people have with their parents). I should preface this by saying that my parents were both in their 40’s when they had me so they are now well into their 70’s. I have friends who have grandparents that are my parents age – so essentially, it’s as if there are two generations betwen us instead of one. Even still, I’ve always been tremendously close to my family and have always been able to say what I want to them (and they’ve been comfortable enough to speak their mind back to me).
The topic of gay marriage came up Saturday morning. A year ago when gay marriage was all that the news was talking about my parents said they were against it. However, as the discussion came up this time, my Mom and Dad both said that they approve of civil unions. They believe that gay people should have all of the same rights nationally as straight people (taxation, social security, inheritance….everything). However, they still believe the title should be civil union versus marriage (which, traditionally for them, has religious roots). I’m fine with that – it’s just semantics. They’ve come a long way.
I’m still working on getting them to not vote for Bush. They both dislike Bush and Kerry (who doesn’t?), but right now they find Bush to be the lesser of two evils (whereas I think Kerry is the lesser of two evils). I’ve got a month to work on them, though. Wish me luck.

They are only 62 and 61, but both Democrats, want it to be called MARRIAGE, and basically ready to kick some ass over it. Its that italian mother thing. Sorry about your niece.

My mother decided last election to listen to reason and abandoned her republican candidate. I never thought I’d live to see the day though that my father refused to vote for the republican candidate, but he’s now an ardent Kerry supporter…and I didn’t even have to talk him into it.
